This summer, 20 years since its celebration of Tchaikovsky, the 29th annual Bard Music Festival once again trains its focus on one of Russian Romanticism's most seminal composers, with a two-week, in-depth exploration of “Rimsky-Korsakov and His World.”

Working intimately with directors like Yasujiro Ozu, Akira Kurosawa, Kenji Mizoguchi and Kon Ichikawa on some of their most important films, Kazuo Miyagawa (1908-99) pushed Japanese cinema to its highest artistic peaks through his lyrical, innovative, and technically flawless camerawork. Considered the greatest cinematographer of postwar Japanese cinema whose career endured through the 1990s, Miyagawa has influenced generations of leading filmmakers around the world.

The classic story of a young Russian immigrant fighting to uphold his dream of a new life in a new country. After his family are massacred in a pogrom, Jewish composer David Quixano escapes to New York City, in search of a new life. There he falls in love with Vera, a beautiful Russian Christian.

FOUR NIGHTS OF DREAM, composer/librettist Moto Osada's opera performed in its US premiere last week at the Japan Society, is based on a cornerstone of 20th century Japanese literature, 'Ten Nights of Dream' by Natsume Soseki. While the four stories Osada has chosen may seem stylized and foreign to the Western sensibility, there is no such difficulty in being drawn in by his interesting, dynamic score--by turns lyric and harshly modern--and the staging by Alec Duffy.

1917. In a remote English village there are rumours of an enchanted wood. One of the inhabitants - a mysterious old man - invites eight strangers to stay. They all have something in common. When, one evening, the wood miraculously appears the guests feel compelled to enter. What happens there has the power to change their lives forever…

World premieres, new productions, and exciting artist debuts will make the 59th season at Sarasota Opera a season not to miss. Highlights of the upcoming year include the return of Giuseppe Verdi, the 6th Sarasota Youth Opera world premiere, and operas by composers such as Vincenzo Bellini and Eugen D'Albert whose operas have not been heard on our stage.

Based in Israel, Roy Assaf Dance makes its U.S. debut with a program of clever and heartfelt works in the Doris Duke Theatre July 12-16. A rising choreographic star, Assaf has been commissioned by companies across the globe including Batsheva Dance Company, The Royal Swedish Ballet, National Dance Company Wales, and LA Dance Project. The program opens with Assaf's embracing duet Six Years Later which is praised for its "beauty, nuances, and intricate, astute movements" (Ora Brafman, Jerusalem Post), and closes with his powerful all-male trio The Hill, inspired by veterans' experiences and based on the Hebrew song "Givat Hatachmoshet".

Antic in a Drain presents its world premiere production of Bucko: Whaleman!

Pontine Theatre presents its original staging of  The Story of a Bad Boy by Thomas Bailey Aldrich.  This classic story of a boy's adventures takes place in the semi-fictional town of Rivermouth (Portsmouth NH).  The production is underwritten by Optima Bank & Trust.  Performances take place  at Strawbery Banke Museum (14 Hancock Street) on Friday March 31 @7pm, Saturday April 1 & 8 @4pm, and Sunday April 2 & 9 @2pm. Tickets ($24) may be purchased online at www.pontine.org. Tickets may also be purchased at the door a half-hour prior to each show, based on availability.  With an innovative use of puppetry and projected images, Pontine Co-Artistic Directors, Greg Gathers and Marguerite Mathews, tell the autobiographical story of a lively boy and his companions in mid-19th century Portsmouth, where Aldrich was sent to live under the watchful eyes of his grandfather. Aldrich's boyhood home, now part of Strawbery Banke Museum, will be open to audience members following each performance.  

The Old Globe's revival of Steve Martin's clever and crowd-pleasing comedy hit Picasso at the Lapin Agile is playing February 4 - March 12, 2017, on the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in the Old Globe Theatre, part of the Globe's Conrad Prebys Theatre Center. In partnership with Balboa Park institutions, local artists, and scientists, the run of the production will feature a number of special events that explore and engage with the play's legendary figures, Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein, and amplify the intersection of art and science found onstage.

After two hours, plus intermission, I left the theater feeling as though I had just attended a concert superbly played by an orchestra of virtuoso performers and conducted by a maestro.

LEAH, THE FORSAKEN is a tale of forbidden love, treachery, and redemption from 1862. Leah, a Jewish refugee fleeing persecution in Hungary, is forbidden by law to pass the night in an Austrian town. But there she wins the love of Rudolf, a Christian citizen. When a particularly zealous persecutor convinces Rudolf she has betrayed him, he quickly renounces her. Leah retreats to her exile, but only after bestowing her and her people's curse on him and his progeny. Can there be any light in such a darkened time, and what could possibly light it?

In celebration of the unparalleled restoration currently underway in the South Street Seaport Museum's flagship, the museum announces its second post-Hurricane Sandy exhibition, The Original Gus Wagner: The Maritime Roots of Modern Tattoo beginning on January 29, 2017, open Wednesday - Sunday 11am-5pm, at the Museum's mezzanine gallery level, accessible from the main entrance of the Museum on 12 Fulton Street.

The Sylvan Winds announce the opening concert of the 2016-17 Season celebrating music, art, culture, and history.

The Canadian Music Centre in British Columbia (CMC BC) proudly reveals its renovated home, the Vancouver Creative Hub (837 Davie Street) with 40-seat black box theatre, the Murray Adaskin Salon, an urban cultural hotspot for Canadian music & the local arts community. The newly upgraded CMC branch will open October 14, 2016 with the first performance of CMC BC's inaugural Murray Adaskin Salon Concert Series - four recitals dedicated to iconic Canadian composers.

Coming up next for Mint Theater Company (Jonathan Bank, Producing Artistic Director; Jen Soloway, Managing Director) will be the first ever New York revival of A Day by the Sea by N.C. Hunter, directed by Austin Pendleton. This will be the Mint's first production as a resident theater company at Theatre Row. Performances will begin July 22nd and continue through September 24th at their new home at the Beckett Theater at Theatre Row (410 West 42nd Street between 9th and Dyer Avenues). Opening Night is set for August 25th.
