Richard LaGravenese on GYPSY Updates, Barbra's Age, and More!
by Sally Henry Fuller - Feb 14, 2015

It's been one of the most talked about (and most stalled) musical projects of the past few years. Stage and screen legend Barbra Streisand has been working with Universal Pictures on a new big screen adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical GYPSY since 2011. This would be the third film of GYPSY having first been made in 1962 (starring Rosalind Russell) and then again in 1993 for television (starring Bette Midler). Screenwriter and THE LAST FIVE YEARS director Richard LaGravenese recently told Queerty.com that the screenplay has been finished since before Christmas.

August Strindberg Rep to Present KRISTINA, 3/13-29
by BWW News Desk - Feb 4, 2015

Strindberg's 'Kristina' (1903) is the unacknowledged basis for the Garbo film 'Queen Christina.' In this skillful study of a neurotic and complex woman, Strindberg reveals the power of his dramatic conceptions and the mastery he had acquired of his craft. The play was the last of a series of Strindberg's later historical dramas that are among the most powerful plays of the kind produced in modern times. August Strindberg Repertory Theatre will present the masterpiece at the Gene Frankel Theatre March 13 to 29 translated from the Swedish by Wendy Weckwerth, directed by Whitney Aronson.

CABARET LIFE NYC: Anatomy of a Duo Show--Classy, Entertaining, Yet Flawed KT Sullivan/Jeff Harnar Sondheim Set at the Beechman Is All About Choices
by Stephen Hanks - Jul 25, 2014

The current Stephen Sondheim tribute show, Our Time, starring KT Sullivan and Jeff Harnar at the Laurie Beechman (which I attended on July 9 and 16; there are two more Wednesday performances at 6pm on August 6, 13), is a charming, classy, and entertaining affair. But it also includes enough flaws in execution that prevent it from being truly great. For one thing, it doesn't really feel like a duo show. It's more like two solo performances within one show, where the performers fit in a couple of numbers together to justify the concept. A critique of the Sullivan/Harnar Sondheim set provides an interesting opportunity to analyze the anatomy of a duo show and the choices that can make it work—or not.

PBS Sites to Stream Ken Burns' THE ROOSEVELTS Following Premiere
by Tyler Peterson - Jul 22, 2014

Ken Burns's upcoming film, THE ROOSEVELTS: AN INTIMATE HISTORY, marks the first time the Roosevelts' individual stories have been woven into a single narrative, following the family's story for more than a century, from Theodore's birth in 1858 to Eleanor's death in 1962. Over the course of those years, Theodore would become the 26th president of the United States and his beloved niece, Eleanor, would marry her fifth cousin, Franklin, who became the 32nd president. Together, they redefined the relationship Americans had with their government and with each other, and redefined, as well, the role of the United States within the wider world.
