The Old Globe's 2012-13 Season will feature the World Premieres of two new musicals: Allegiance - A New American Musical by Jay Kuo and Lorenzo Thione and A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder by Robert L. Freedman and Steven Lutvak. The season also includes George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion in celebration of the classic play's 100th anniversary and the World Premiere of a new adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House by Anne-Charlotte Hanes Harvey and Kirsten Brandt. Two recent Broadway hits will make their San Diego debuts at the Globe: David Lindsay-Abaire's Good People and Jon Robin Baitz's Other Desert Cities. Rounding out the season are the West Coast Premiere of Bekah Brunstetter's Be a Good Little Widow and the Southern California Premiere of Tarell Alvin McCraney's The Brothers Size.

Maryland Ensemble Theatre Presents New Adaptation of ANTIGONE, 3/22-4/15

Maryland Ensemble Theatre (MET) presents a new world premiere adaptation of Sophocles' tragic classic greek tragedy, Antigone, which pits the courageous title character against King Creon and the laws of Thebes in defense of her brother's honor with fatal consequences. Antigone will run from March 22nd to April 15th every Thursday through Sunday except Easter (4/8) at Maryland Ensemble Theatre (31 W. Patrick St. Frederick MD 21701). All shows are at 8pm except Sundays at 7pm and one Sunday matinee at 2pm on April 1 which will be followed by a talk back with the writer, director, cast and special guest Linda Pappas Funsch, a Middle East scholar from Frederick Community College . Tickets are $15 - $24 (except $5 preview performance on 3/22) and may be purchased online at marylandensemble.org, by phone at (301) 694-4744 or in person at the MET box office. The opening will be celebrated on Sunday, March 25th at 6pm with a pre-show reception catered by The Greene Turtle preceding the performance at 7pm.

Four long acts long, with casting challenges, bedeviled by attitudes modern audiences likely will not share, and, it must be said, self-indulgent as regards some of O'Neill's great weaknesses, Moon for the Misbegotten requires more than most companies and audiences can summon to put it across successfully. I say "successfully" but perhaps "successfully as possible" might be the more accurate phrase. Washington's Heritage-O'Neill Theatre Company's current production partly but not fully meets these challenges.

Jack Viertel, Artistic Director of New York City Center's Encores! series, today announced the final two directors for the 2012 Encores! season. As previously announced, James Lapine will direct the first Encores! show of the season, Stephen Sondheim's Merrily We Roll Along, opening on February 8, 2012. Marc Bruni will direct Rodgers and Hammerstein's rarely seen Pipe Dream, opening on March 28¸ and John Rando will direct Jule Styne and Leo Robin's Gentlemen Prefer Blondes opening on May 9. Music Director Rob Berman will conduct all three musicals. This year, the number of performances has been expanded: Pipe Dream and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes will play for seven performances each, and Merrily We Roll Along, extended for a two-week run, will play for 15 performances.

Executive Producer Lou Spisto today announced that The Old Globe will produce the World Premieres of four new plays and musicals in its 2011-12 Winter Season. The season will feature the World Premiere musicals Some Lovers by music legend Burt Bacharach and Tony Award winner Steven Sater and Nobody Loves You by Gaby Alter and Itamar Moses, as well as the West Coast Premiere of John Kander and Fred Ebb's The Scottsboro Boys, recently nominated for 12 Tony Awards including Best Musical, directed and choreographed by five-time Tony Award winner Susan Stroman. The two plays receiving World Premiere productions are Somewhere by Globe Playwright-in-Residence Matthew Lopez and The Recommendation by Jonathan Caren. The new season also includes revivals of Richard O'Brien's The Rocky Horror Show and the Eugene O'Neill classic Anna Christie directed by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner David Auburn. Special events include the World Premiere of Odyssey by Todd Almond, a music theater event conceived and directed by Lear deBessonet celebrating the Globe's 75th Anniversary, The Old Globe/University of San Diego Graduate Theatre Program production of Twelfth Night and Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, which returns for its 14th consecutive year.
