BEN BUTLER by Richard Strand begins Sep 25 through Oct 21, opens for reviewers Friday September 28, 2018. When a runaway slave demands sanctuary at a Union Army garrison, the General in charge is faced with moral quandary: follow the letter of the law, or make a game-changing move that could alter the course of US history? "…Part comedy, part historical drama and part biography… by turns sarcastic, droll and witty." NY Times
by Shari Barrett - Sep 30, 2019
During the thought-provoking 90-minute play, made even more visually intense via attention-grabbing historical projections of news headlines to forward the progression of time on Rachel Myers exquisitely transformational scenic design, Feldshuh and Faracy fully embody not only the physical presence of Ginsburg and O'Connor but also their dependency on each other to get their voices heard over the gender-biased male members of the Court. Their dedication to justice and the law was solid, although O'Connor felt the need to take it slowly like a tortoise while Ginsburg always felt the need to charge ahead like the hare when it came to issues of sexual harassment towards women.

General Butler is faced with a moral dilemma when escaped slaves request sanctuary at Fort Monroe.  Not following the letter of the law will alter the course of U.S. History. Based on actual events in 1861, this play is clever without being glib, meaningful without being pretentious, and side-splittingly funny.  It's a timeless exploration of social conscience and individual responsibility.

Chaos arises when letters begin to fall from a town monument and government officials ban them one by one. The community depends on the strength of a determined teenage girl to fight for their freedom of speech. This unique musical is part romance, part clever word game and part adult fable that reminds us of how precious our liberties are and how important it is to have the courage to stand up for what we believe.

Opening as it does to coincide with the 70th anniversary of D-Day, Joe Banno's moving production reminds us just how much we are still haunted by the ghosts of World War II, and the horrific moral dilemmas of those days. With a large cast that is mostly up to the material Banno has given us a memorable evening of theater that challenges us. Forget plays that give you a cozy, morally superior perch, Mann the playwright and Banno the director force us to think about how we contributed to the monster that was Adolf Hitler.

Many women have taken to social media to celebrate the day by posting photos of themselves flexing in honor of the iconic World War II era Rosie the Riveter. Rosie was symbolic of the millions of American women who kept the country running while many young men were over seas fighting. Some of our favorite female Broadway stars have posted photos in recognition of the day; check them out below. We will be updating list as more come in:

Robert Icke, an associate director at the Almeida for the past six years, bids farewell in typically bold and epic fashion with his latest contemporary update. Arthur Schnitzler's Professor Bernhardi, which premiered in 1912, has been skilfully reconfigured as an interrogation of 2019's preoccupation with 'identity'.

Playwright Edward Bond parodies, skewers, and otherwise upends the restoration comedies so familiar to theatre-goers with his work RESTORATION. It's a wickedly funny piece that attempts to make some sense of how and why the division of wealth was so unbalanced (sound familiar, it should be since we're there again today), allowing the seemingly useless to rule their ivy covered roosts, replete with lush gardens and enough ornate clothing to allow for a costume change for some characters for every scene. St. Louis Shakespeare has mounted a wonderfully amusing production that also makes you think and that's a rarity these days.

The classic story turned epic musical has finally made its way to Grand Bend's Huron Country Playhouse. Based on Victor Hugo's novel, LES MISERABLES follows the life of prisoner 24601, Jean Valjean, who was thrown in jail for stealing a loaf of bread for a hungry child.

Portland Stage creates one-of-a-kind productions specifically selected for its community. Each season, Portland Stage Executive & Artistic Director Anita Stewart looks for a means to connect the plays with a thematic thread. For the 2018-2019 Season, audiences may find the plays are connected by the idea of borders, boundaries, and how we embrace, or wish to change them. From a runaway slave seeking to join the Union army, to the photographer striving to help an Arabic speaking boy; from a man searching for his true identity, to a woman looking to connect with spirits, each play in our upcoming season looks at how we celebrate, rebel against or embrace and understand our place in the world.

In a very near future America, as portrayed in a fictional memoir by Henderson West (45th President of the USA), the 'Spirit of Law' becomes the guiding legislative principal that individuals and corporations adhere to. The legal and judicial system embrace the 'Spirit of Law' as a means of determining intent, rather than relying on precedent as a means of determining guilt or innocence.
