It is refreshing to see Tennessee Williams' brilliant work, THE GLASS MENAGERIE, on a contemporary stage in its purest form. Nebraska Repertory Theatre has succeeded in etching this classic gem into my brain where it lingers with a hint of sadness but also of beauty.

In 1945, a daring new play brought a brilliant young writer to national attention, and, in his own words, 'changed [his] life irrevocably' when it first premiered on Broadway. 'For time is the longest distance between places' but in the case of an iconic play like The Glass Menagerie, time seems to melt away. Tennessee Williams based the play on his 1943 short story 'Portrait of a Girl in Glass.' The Glass Menagerie premiered in 1944 in Chicago where it caught the attention of critics Ashton Stevens and Claudia Cassidy. With their help, the producers were able to move the play to Broadway, where it opened at the Playhouse Theatre in 1945. In The Glass Menagerie, the character Tom serves as both narrator and character in a play that is memory and yet somehow very real and present. The Glass Menagerie runs April 4-April 14 at Hershey Area Playhouse.

One of America's greatest playwrights, Tennessee Williams wrote fiction and motion picture screenplays, but he is acclaimed primarily for his plays, nearly all of which are set in the South, but which at their best rise above regionalism to approach universal themes. Tennessee Williams drew heavily on his family experiences in his writings.

Sierra Repertory Theatre is proud to present one of Tennessee Williams most highly regarded plays, The Glass Menagerie. It has been, and still is 'must see theatre.' This is a compelling story of an overbearing mother, her resentful son, her fragile daughter and the unsuspecting gentleman caller. Deeply complex themes of duty, love, abandonment, and self-deception are on high display here. What happens to a family when the dreams of one clash with the dreams of another?
