BWW Reviews: CINDERELLA Steals Hearts in Lyrical Production at Washington National Opera
by Jeffrey Walker - May 11, 2015

CINDERELLA wins more than bracelets in Washington National Opera's closing opera of the season. Featuring the auspicious debut of American mezzo soprano Isabel Leonard (2013 Richard Tucker Winner), Rossini's comic and lyrical romantic opera weaves an easy spell. CINDERELLA – “La Cenerentola” – is conducted with skill and precision by Italian conductor Speranza Scappucci, also making her WNO debut. The role of Isabella (Cinderella) is sung by Leonard on May 13, 16, 19 and 21. Alternating the role with Leonard, is Irish mezzo Tara Erraught, making not only her WNO debut but her first American opera appearance. Erraught is Isabella on May 11, 15, and the matinee on May 17.

BWW Reviews: Fast and Furious Fun at Trinity Rep's A FLEA IN HER EAR
by Robert Barossi - Apr 13, 2015

Door-slamming farce can be a tough beast to tame. There's often so much going on, so much quick-moving action, doors opening and closing, characters literally running from place to place, that it can easily devolve into a confused mess. And there are usually so many witty retorts and double entendres, also often delivered very quickly, that they can sometimes be missed altogether. Luckily, in the hands of Trinity Repertory Company, A Flea in Her Ear by Georges Feydeau, is handled with near-perfect precision.

BWW Review: Three's Company in Garden Theatre's BOEING BOEING
by Matt Tamanini - Mar 31, 2015

There is a lot wrong with the central conceit of Marc Camoletti's farce BOEING BOEING, playing at the Garden Theatre through April 4th. Set in Paris in 1963, Bernard, an insatiable womanizer (likely with undiagnosed obsessive compulsive disorder) has figured out that the best way to reap the benefits of having three live-in fiancees without any of them knowing about each other is to only propose to flight attendants on conflicting schedules. From there, the jokes nearly write themselves as schedules change and weather delays departures. Directed by Keith Smith, the Garden Theatre's six-person cast bounces through the madcap comedy with an abundant joy, despite all of the outdated gender politics. BOEING BOEING, translated from the original French by Beverley Cross and Francis Evans, stands up well as a time-capsule from a different time with a different perspective, and if you can get past the show's uncomfortable premise, you are sure to enjoy its charming cast and taut direction.

BWW Reviews: ILove99 THE MUSICAL! Offers A Cabaret To Save Los Angeles Intimate Theatre
by Shari Barrett - Mar 25, 2015

Due to the enormous success of their first show, Sixth Avenue presented an encore of its National Tour 'ILove99 The Musical!' cabaret event to save Los Angeles intimate theatre on Tuesday, March 24 at the Dragonfly on Hollywood's Theater Row. Produced by Adam Silver and directed by Alan Smithee (wink wink) featuring returning and additional performers, the event proved to be a real meeting of the minds for both union and non-union audience members. And what a show it was, giving both AEA union members as well as non-members a chance to enjoy great entertainment while rallying everyone to go out and encourage all union member to vote NO on the proposed union changes that could wipe out intimate theater in Los Angeles.

BWW Reviews: Giddy Comedy Gold in Seattle Shakes' TARTUFFE
by Jay Irwin - Mar 23, 2015

Moliere's "Tartuffe" is already a classic drink from the comedy well from which many have drawn. But what director Makaela Pollock and the folks at Seattle Shakespeare Company have done with their current production is to take that comedy and reinvigorated it with a kind of screwball comedy style making the already funny downright giddy hilarity.

BWW Reviews: The Hilarious '60s Romantic Farce BOEING BOEING is Perfectly Executed by Torch Theater
by Jill Schafer - Mar 20, 2015

BOEING BOEING is the perfect screwball comedy. Though this tale of an American playboy in Paris with three 'air hostess' fiances was a hit in France, the English translation flopped on Broadway in 1965. But the revival over 40 years later was a hit and spurred a flood of regional productions around the country. Fortunately for Twin Cities theater-goers, Torch Theater chose it as one of it's 2015 shows at the Minneapolis Theatre Garage. With a stellar cast, spot on direction, and a swinging '60s vibe created by set, costumes, and music, it's practically perfect in every way (to quote that other big show). I can't remember the last time I laughed so much at the theater!

Known as an existential comedy, PICASSO AT LAPIN AGILE is Steve Martin's tongue-and-cheek poke at the deep philosophical pieces penned by French playwrights like Jean Paul Sartre or Eugene Ionesco. In this Victor Hugo a go-go knee-slapper, Martin creates an alternative universe where famed theoretical physicist Albert Einstein and famed theoretical romantic and painter Pablo Picasso meet at the Parisian bar Lapin Agile and wax philosophies, ponder existence, and, with help of a time-traveling 'country boy', brave the new 20th century world and the future beyond.
