For the fifth year, Grand Park and The Music Center will present downtown's largest July 4th¬†party with¬†Grand Park + The Music Center's 4th¬†of July Block Party¬†on¬†Tuesday, July 4, 2017, from¬†2:00 p.m. ¬Ė 9:30 p.m.¬†¬†Angelenos will enjoy entertainment that highlights the sounds of America featuring Jazz, Funk, Blues and Classical artists with DJ sets inspired by these musical genres.¬† The day's festivities include a kids' play area; live music performances; L.A.'s best food trucks; a mobile vendor and activity area; and a fireworks show, which will be shot from the roof of The Music Center's Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, set to Pop and Classic hits along with patriotic music, and visible throughout Downtown L.A. and the surrounding neighborhoods.¬† L.A.'s favorite July 4th¬†block party will cover more than five city blocks from Spring Street to Grand Avenue and from Temple Street to 2ndStreet. I had the chance to sit down with the writer, lyricist, and composer of DEATHLESS, Zack Zadek and talk about his inspiration for the show, the process of bringing a new musical to life, and the emotional themes on display in this new production. Beginning June 24, actress Victoria Platt will play the role of Gloria, joining actor Bo Foxworth in The Fountain Theatre's smash hit production of Building the Wall by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning playwright Robert Schenkkan. Building the Wall opened at The Fountain in March, where it was the first in a series of productions taking place across the U.S. as part of a National New Plays Network Rolling World Premiere. On July 21, 2017, Santa Fe Opera presented Ron Daniels' production of Gaetano Donizetti's bel canto work, LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR. Beginning with a storm and several huge rainbows, the open sides of Santa Fe Opera's Crosby Theatre allowed the audience to watch the sun set as the orchestra played the opera's overture. Based on Sir Walter Scott's novel, THE BRIDE OF LAMMERMOOR, the opera tells the story of a young woman who loses her reason when forced to marry a man she does not love. (more...)

Ford Amphitheatre Reopens with Civic Dedication Ceremony

The John Anson Ford Amphitheatre reopened today with a civic dedication ceremony, marking the completion of a multi-year construction project that has restored, upgraded and enhanced this iconic and historic venue on Cahuenga Boulevard East in the Hollywood Hills. Dancers and musicians from the troupe Viver Brasil, among the artists to be featured in the 2017 Ford summer season, led a celebratory procession to the venue's completely new stage, where LA County 3rd District Supervisor Sheila Kuehl cut a red ribbon to inaugurate an era of broadened programming, national artistic partnerships, and improved technical facilities and audience amenities. The latter includes the new Ford Terrace Cafe on the new Zev Yaroslavsky Terrace, "The Zev," which was dedicated today in honor of retired LA County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, who championed the Ford's revitalization during his 20 years as 3rd District Supervisor. 'Failure: A Love Story' chronicles the lives, loves and deaths of the three Fail sisters (June Carryl, Margaret Katch, and Nicole Shalhoub) and the one man with the double moniker Mortimer Mortimer (Kurt Quinn) who fell in love with each of them but not at the same time. Set against the backdrop of 1920s Chicago, this touching, whimsical tale explores the impermanence of life and the permanence of love, especially among devoted family members. The 'failure' in the title refers to poor Mortimer's inability to ever marry any of the three sisters after falling in love with them, as the untimely deaths of the three sisters happen before any marriages can take place.
