Theatre Bay Area Announces 2018 Glickman Award

Theatre Bay Area is pleased to announce playwright Ofra Daniel and the Jewish Circle Theatre have been selected as the recipients of this year's prestigious Will Glickman Award for Love Sick. The play's world premiere, produced by Jewish Circle Theatre in association with John Gertz Productions, ran at the Osher Studio in Berkeley from January 12 through February 12, 2017, and then at Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts February 23 to March 19, 2017. This is the first Will Glickman Award for both Ofra Daniel and Jewish Circle Theatre.

Baryshnikov Arts Center (BAC) continues its Spring 2018 Music Series on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at 7:30pm with a presentation of Olivier Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time conceived and directed by Sarah Rothenberg with lighting designed by Jennifer Tipton, performed in BAC's Jerome Robbins Theater. An all-star ensemble of instrumentalists - Joshua Rubin, clarinet; Geoff Nuttall, violin; Christopher Costanza, cello; and Sarah Rothenberg, piano - bring to life this timeless work, which Messiaen wrote and premiered in 1941 while in confinement at a prisoner-of-war camp in Germany during World War II.

Assistant Conductor Joshua Gersen will conduct the New York Philharmonic in a program of 20th-century American works: Barber's Adagio for Strings, Bernstein's Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, and Copland's Symphony No. 3, Thursday, February 22, 2018, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, February 23 at 8:00 p.m.; and Saturday, February 24 at 8:00 p.m.

San Diego Symphony Hosts World Premiere Featuring Violinist Anne Akiko Meyers

The San Diego Symphony will present the world premiere of Adam Schoenberg's Orchard in Fog for Violin and Orchestra during the Jacobs Masterworks concert Preludes and Premiere. Adam Schoenberg, who was inspired in part by a photograph by Massachusetts graphic artist Adam Laipson, wrote this piece specifically for violinist Anne Akiko Meyers, who will perform the work. San Diego Symphony Associate Conductor Sameer Patel will make his Jacobs Masterworks debut conducting the San Diego Symphony Orchestra in two performances Saturday, February 10, 2018, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, February 11 at 2 p.m.

On January 5, 2018, Lakewood Theatre Company brings to the stage the world premiere of C.S. Whitcomb's adaptation of Christopher Morley's debut novel Parnassus on Wheels. This is the story of a strong, smart woman trying to find her path and create a worthy destiny for herself in a man's world a world where women don't even yet have the right to vote. It is also the story of first love arriving surprisingly in middle age, and a celebration of the love of good books and how they can enrich the hardworking lives of poor, dirt farmers and small town folks. At times both comical and affectionate, Parnassus On Wheels continues to remain as relevant as it did when it was first released 100 years ago

Wallach Artist-in-Residence Leif Ove Andsnes as soloist; Saint-Sa ns's Symphony No. 3, Organ, with Philharmonic organist Kent Tritle; and Vaughan Williams's Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, Thursday, February 8, 2018, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, February 9 at 2:00 p.m.; and Saturday, February 10 at 8:00 p.m.
