The play selections at TPNC have always intrigued me. I consistently leave their shows with new insights and feeling thoroughly entertained, or emotionally roused. Currently playing is Terra Nova, which won playwright Ted Tally an OBIE Award for its 1984 New York production. Tally also won an Oscar for his adapted screenplay of The Silence Of The Lambs in 1991.

The next show in the Vortex Theater will be Terra Nova, by Ted Tally.  Opening March 25 and running until April 17, the play covers the last leg of the ill-fated 1912 Terra Nova South Pole expedition, led by Captain Robert Falcon Scott.  Co-directed by Mark Hisler (left, in below image) and Aaron Worley (right), this show is a cunning balance between a thoughtful social commentary and a visceral human trial.  Mark Hisler and I met to discuss this balance, and the history behind it.

On February 23 and 24, 2015, the pilot episode of composer Lisa Bielawa's serial opera Vireo: The Spiritual Biography of a Witch's Accuser will be videotaped at The Yost Theater in Santa Ana (307 North Spurgeon St.). Miller Theatre at Columbia University School of the Arts has announced its 2012-13, 24th Season. Including LE POÈME HARMONIQUE IN "VENEZIA," on opening night, eight intriguing composer portraits, featuring John Cage, Jonathan Harvey, Olga Neuwirth, Sofia Gubaidulina, Enno Poppe, Rebeecca Saunders, Oliver Knussen and Julio Estrada. Bach, Revisted, highlights innovators, baroque and modern alike, featuring Jennifer Koh teaming up with mentor Jaime Laredo, harpsichordist Kristian Bezuidenhout and Ensemble Signal playing Bach, Rebel and Michael Gordon, and pianist Christopher Taylor juxtaposing Bach and Rzewski. 'The Butterfly Conservatory: Tropical Butterflies Alive in Winter,' an annual favorite visited by millions of children and adults, returns to the American Museum of Natural History on October 16. Celebrating its thirteenth year at the Museum, this highly popular winter attraction transforms the iciest day into a summer escape, inviting visitors to mingle with up to 500 fluttering, iridescent butterflies among blooming tropical flowers and lush green vegetation in 80-degree temperatures. The Butterfly Conservatory is on view through May 30, 2011.

Sea Rex: Journey to a Prehistoric World, a stunning IMAX film, opens at the American Museum of Natural History on Monday, January 10, 2011. This 41-minute film sheds light on the extraordinary prehistoric underwater world and its larger-than-life creatures, which, with their daunting size and natural ability for predation, were ruling the seas 20 million years before dinosaurs roamed the earth. Moviegoers will meet Julie, an imaginative young woman, as she travels from a modern-day aquarium to the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods. Viewers will explore an amazing underwater universe inhabited by, among other animals, the powerful Liopleurodon, the long-necked Elasmosaurus, Ophthalmosaurus or 'eye lizard,' the ferocious Prognathodon, and the gigantic 75-foot Shonisaurus. The film was shot in studio and on location at various museums in Paris and London, as well as in Egypt and New Zealand to capture the aerial, landscape, and underwater scenes. Sea Rex: Journey to a Prehistoric World was written and directed by Pascal Vuong and Ronan Chapalain and produced by Catherine and Pascal Vuong and Francois Mantello. The film features an original score by Franck Marchal and a screenplay by Pascal Vuong, Rick Dowlearn, and Ronan Chapalain. The film is produced by N3D LAND Productions and Mantello Brothers Productions. Sea Rex: Journey to a Prehistoric World is distributed worldwide by 3D Entertainment Distribution. Body and Spirit: Tibetan Medical Paintings, an exhibition of 64 Tibetan medical paintings (also known as tangkas) from the American Museum of Natural History's collection, opens Tuesday, January 25 in the Museum's fourth-floor Audubon Gallery, and will run through July 17, 2011.
