Flying in the face of the dreadful 21st Century practice of making extreme cuts and revisions to classic musicals by deceased authors in the belief that they would offend contemporary sensibilities if presented as originally written, director Bartlett Sher has spent a good part of the last two decades mounting elegant and thoughtful revivals that smooth over potential trouble spots by, believe it or not, doing what directors are assigned to do... interpret and direct.

This week the new national tour of The Lincoln Center Theater Production of My Fair Lady opened at Syracuse's Landmark Theatre and it is a moving, powerful, and beautiful production under the superb direction of Bartlett Sher. It is in fact the classic My Fair Lady  you are probably used to seeing but it does offer a fresh take on the classic musical in this new and breathtaking production.

The late Lehman Engel was a conductor for a number of Broadway shows in the 1940s through the 1960s, in addition to writing several masterful books on the creation and construction of musicals, and founding the musical theater workshop that bears his name and has trained many of the top songwriters and librettists of the past thirty years. He invented the term 'charm song,' referring to a song that isn't a true comedy song or a ballad, but is intended to make the audience smile and like the character singing it. The gold standard for charm songs is My Fair Lady - practically the whole show is charm songs like 'The Rain in Spain,' 'Wouldn't It Be Loverly,' and and 'You Did It.' The only overt love song is handed to a minor character, and the story is resolved via dialogue rather than a big final number. And it's just a great show.

The white baking potato has lost pride of place to red potatoes, sweet potatoes, and fingerlings, but the English have made it the basis of a universe of lunch and dinner entrees. Try it yourself.

From SOUTH PACIFIC to THE KING AND I to FIDDLER ON THE ROOF and now MY FAIR LADY, director Bartlett Sher has been spending the better part of this young century perfecting his method of mounting ravishing, emotionally stimulating productions of classic 20th Century musicals.

MY FAIR LADY at Broadway Palm was an incredibly delightful, very lovely--or should I say Loverly--production. Broadway Palm has once again brought a classic story to life on their stage, and they did a spectacular job (as they always do!). From the gorgeous costumes, to the fun musical numbers, to the funny, heartwarming storyline, this is not a show to be missed.
