The June 2020 release of the filmed production of Jeamarie Simpson's HERETIC, timed for the 350th Anniversary of Mary Dyer's execution, has just been announced. Although the premiere is a year away, it seems fitting that, coinciding with Mother's Day and the abiding relevance of issues related to free speech, we offer an exclusive interview with the author about the work and the person ('the mother of the First Amendment), conducted by her associate, Shannon Cain.

Against The Grain Theatre, Toronto's visionary chamber opera company, is known for electric performances that act as 'a bracing wake-up call to the spirit' (The Globe and Mail). That daring candor is now being channeled via its new in-house recording label, which launches with a live recording ofOsvaldo Golijov's 'ecstatically beautiful...radical and disorienting' song cycle Ayre this December (The New Yorker).

Ben's character may be a phony pastiche, and Elaine's a confusing cypher, but in Elaine's mother Mrs. Robinson, novelist Charles Webb struck gold. Bored, lecherous, alcoholic, deeply dishonest, vengeful, and possessed of a twisted motherly loyalty, she is real and vital and scary as hell. Dyana Neal's Mrs. Robinson is pretty much perfect. She has the intimidating stare, the commanding manner, the resolute lack of curiosity about any aspect of the world aside from sex, tobacco, and alcohol, the maternal protectiveness, all down pat. If Anne Bancroft is looking down from heaven, she probably approves.

THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME racked up awards in both London and NYC, including winning the Tony Award for best play in 2015. Just last year the Broadway tour stopped in Minneapolis, which I saw and was impressed by the clever and inventive storytelling. Now available for regional productions, Mixed Blood Theatre is bringing us their take on the play. The West End/Broadway production was very tech-heavy, and I was curious what this story with a smaller-scale production and in a smaller house would look like. It turns out I like it even better. The 15-person Broadway cast has been reduced to just 9, with very smart casting and direction. There are still some pretty impressive tech effects, but also some great low-tech effects that all serve this story of a 15-year-old boy with an unspecified autism-like condition who goes on an epic journey in search of the truth.

The culinary journey of AMERICAN MASTERS 'Chefs Flight' - four documentaries on legendary chefs - continues with a profile on Jacques Pépin, a young immigrant with movie-star looks and a charming Gallic accent, who elevated essential kitchen techniques to an art form to become one of America's most beloved food icons.

If art were to mimic human nature, then the beautiful must exist alongside the grotesque. Directed by NUS Theatre Studies alumnus and Saga Seed Theatre's Associate Director Thong Pei Qin, the production examines human's inclinations for petty grievances via intertwined narratives, which centres on a very unusual premise: a dead dog's tail continues to incessantly wag.

Family is the ideal, the necessity, the burden and the war zone of Nathaniel Martello-White's intricate new piece, alternately elusive and confrontational. It's group therapy - Ultz provides the community hall plastic chairs and tea table - with no safeguards, where familial secrets are not just teased out but wrenched, kicking and screaming, to the surface.
