Harold Pinter was born in Hackney, in London's East End, in October of 1930. An only child, he was born to Jewish parents of very moderate means; his father, a tailor, and his mother, a homemaker, were first-generation descendants of Eastern European immigrants. Like many of his contemporaries, Pinter's childhood was shaped by the onslaught of World War II; at the age of nine, he was evacuated from London through Operation Pied Piper and resettled in a town in Cornwall. The sense of isolation he felt in Cornwall would come to influence his work, as would the changed London to which he returned during the Blitz, where he was witness to, as his 2008 Guardianobituary put it, 'the dramatic nature of wartime life - the palpable fear, the sexual desperation, the genuine sense that everything could end tomorrow.'

Christopher Cross was by far the biggest new star of 1980, virtually defining adult contemporary radio with a series of smoothly sophisticated ballads including the #1 hit, 'Sailing'. 'Ride Like the Wind', 'Think of Laura' and 'Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)' by this game-changing singer/songwriter earned him five Grammys, an Academy Award and a Golden Globe. For a memorable upbeat evening of music that sounds as good today as his timeless recordings, Christopher Cross will entertain with his band at The Ridgefield Playhouse on Friday, March 28, at 8 p.m. Special guest is Joshua Payne, a singer/songwriter with a big, classically-trained voice who brings a unique spin to the pop table and has had his own show at the Playhouse. Company C Contemporary Ballet founder and Artistic Director Charles Anderson has announced that his 12-year-old Company will undertake a strategic shift its public performance model from a two-program winter and spring season at venues in San Francisco and the East Bay to one driven by artistic projects effective at the close of the current 2014 season in May. The transition has been inspired by Anderson's desire to pursue a variety of artistic and choreographic projects, performances and collaborations without being tied to specific seasonal dates, venues and their attendant requirements. Prior to the discussions of the Company's future direction, founding Executive Director Elizabeth Reed had announced her retirement to the Board effective June 30, 2014 in order to devote more time to her family, and has now made her retirement public. The Company's 2014 season runs January 30 through May 11 in San Francisco and Walnut Creek. For more information about Company C Contemporary Ballet, visitwww.companycballet.org .
