Manhattan Theatre Club's New York premiere of The Cake, written by Bekah Brunstetter ("This Is Us," "American Gods," The Oregon Trail) and directed by MTC's award-winning Artistic Director Lynne Meadow (The Assembled Parties, The Tale of the Allergist's Wife, The Commons of Pensacola), begins performances tomorrow at MTC at New York City Center - Stage I (131 West 55th Street). Multi-GRAMMY Award-winning composer/pianist/educator Arturo O'Farrill and the non-profit The Afro Latin Jazz Alliance (ALJA) are thrilled to announce NYC's premier Afrobeat concert of 2019, ALJO + AFROBEAT = FELA!, featuring O'Farrill and his 18-piece Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra (ALJO) alongside Tony Award-Nominated Sahr Ngaujah (lead actor in the Tony-winning Broadway musical, Fela!). Today's singular forbearers of the Afrobeat genre take to the stage with O'Farrill to debut big band jazz arrangements of Fela Anikulapo Kuti's classic works as well as innovative collaborations with special guest artists Wunmi (vocals), Tosin Aribisala (drums/vocals), Bryan Vargas (guitar), and DJ Ausar. Celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Fela!'s Broadway premiere in 2009, ALJO + AFROBEAT = FELA! will be presented in the Peter Jay Sharp Theatre @ Symphony Space on January 25 & 26, 2019. This spring, Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA) presents a wide range of exciting and diverse events, including the return of fan favorites like Mystery in the Museum, Flavor Lab, Trivia Night and features the triumphant return of Tania Katan. Additionally, several events relate to its 2019 spring exhibition "Now Playing: Video 1999-2019." These events offer guests the opportunity to engage with artists, the community and museumgoers to consider the questions and themes explored throughout the Museum. Austin's The Black Drumset Announce New Album

Austin-based band The Black Drumset will release their new album Charged on March 8. The album is available to pre-order now at Bandcamp. This week the band revealed the official video for 'There's A Shark In The Boat,' the first single from Charged. The video premiered at New Noise Magazine and can also be shared at YouTube. About the song The Black Drumset's Brian Willey told New Noise Magazine, 'The song title is inspired by the feeling of suddenly realizing there is real danger in a situation and you've got to focus and take immediate action to avoid disaster. Humans are really good at denying danger until its too late. The lyrics are written in the language of an interpersonal relationship, but its really about a dangerously divided society.'
