The electrifying Afro-Cuban All-Stars, under the guidance of legendary Juan de Marcos, pay tribute to Cuba's golden age of music when the band makes its debut at The Younes and Soraya Nazarian Center for the Performing Arts (The Soraya) on Friday, January 19. Mixing the joy and melancholy for Cuba's past with the exuberant sounds of contemporary performance, the 17-piece Afro-Cuban All-Stars bring the next generation of Cuban music to life on stage. In addition, the evening will also feature The Soraya debut of the Havana-based Harold L pez-Nussa Trio, which will open the evening.

Alfred Uhry's 1987 Pulitzer-Prize winning play Driving Miss Daisy is receiving a rare and outstanding revival at the Colony Theatre starring Donna Mills. It originally played off-Broadway and was filmed in 1989 with Jessica Tandy. The play recounts the relationship between Daisy Werthan (Mills) a white Southern Jewish woman and her African-American chauffeur Hoke Colburn (Arthur Richardson). This current production plays the Colony through December 10 only.

But there's a dramatic difference that sets this Butterfly apart: the broader conversation taking place on cultural appropriation, yellowface, and Asian American representation. While certainly not new to many Asian and Pacific Islanders, these conversations have permeated the Puget Sound theater scene for the past several years following a production of The Mikado that made national news.
