The Boston Globe recently talked to Tony Award-winner Mel Brooks about directing, his legendary career and his unique creatives process. Brooks' musical YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN is set to play at the Boston Opera House beginning this Tuesday for a two-week engagement.

New Village Arts, Carlsbad's award-winning, professional theatre is very proud to announce its Tenth Season. The New York Philharmonic will present SONDHEIM: The Birthday Concert on March 15 and Tuesday, March 16, 2010, at 7:30 p.m. This celebration of the 80th birthday of the great Broadway and film composer/lyricist will include his most enduring orchestral music and songs - performed, in some cases, by the stars of the original Broadway cast productions - in addition to rarely-heard material. Joining the celebration will be (in alphabetical order) Michael Cerveris, Victoria Clark, Jason Danieley, Nathan Gunn, George Hearn, Patti LuPone, Marin Mazzie, Audra McDonald, Donna Murphy, Mandy Patinkin, Bernadette Peters, and others to be announced, including surprise guests. Paul Gemignani, Mr. Sondheim's longtime collaborator, will conduct the New York Philharmonic; Lonny Price is the director; and Mr. Price and Matt Cowart are the producers.

The New Mel Brooks Musical Young Frankenstein, a new musical comedy from the creative team of the 12-time Tony Award winning smash The Producers, comes to Boston for a limited two-week engagement at the Boston Opera House April 20 - May 2.

Five incredible Latin Jazz legends will heat up the Blue Note stage at the Winter Latin Jazz Festival from January 19 to 31. The festival will start with jazz flutist Dave Valentin and conga legend Candido from Jan. 19 - 20. Trumpeter Arturo Sandoval and his Latin jazz group will finish up the week from Jan. 21 - 24. Argentinian saxophonist Gato Barbieri will play from Jan. 25 - 27, and percussionist Poncho Sanchez will finish up the festival from Jan. 28 - 31.

Beowulf Alley Theatre's Old Time Radio Theatre presents an exciting series of live presentations of old radio shows from the golden age at the theatre, 11 South 6th Avenue (Downtown between Broadway and Congress) in the first and third week of each month. Performances are at 7 p.m. (this is a change from the originally announced 6:30 p.m. performance time).

In case this is your first time reading one of my reviews of a Broadway revival of a classic musical, allow me introduce you to my personal prejudice. I completely abhor the now very common practice of revising the book and messing with the score of any musical theatre piece after the authors are deceased. If a composer, bookwriter or lyricist is around to approve of changes, that's swell, but all too often their estates will allow anything from the sparse, but significant, tweaks to South Pacific to the wholesale revisions of The Pajama Game and The Music Man. Even more deplorable is the practice of letting these changes go uncredited, as was done in the three examples just cited, giving audiences no clue that what they are watching is not wholly the musical the original authors wrote.

Strawdog Theatre Company completes their 21st season with Peter Barnes' dark comedy 'Red Noses,' directed by House Theatre's Matt Hawkins. In Barnes' 1985 Olivier Award-winning play, the Black Plague has wiped out half of Europe's 14th century population, so God gives the young priest Father Flote a special mission to save his suffering people ... make 'em laugh. Flote gathers a band of desperately untalented misfits, turns them into clowns and together they search for salvation with hilarity. Hawkins, who also directed House's hit production of 'Hatfield & McCoy,' makes his Strawdog directing debut with a 23-person cast. 'Red Noses' runs about two hours and ten minutes with one intermission, and includes free admittance to Strawdog Late Night following the Friday and Saturday shows (Late Night schedule available at www.strawdog.org).

Friedman Theatre' on Thursday, September 4. The ceremony began at the theatre (261 West 47th Street at 8th Avenue) . MTC previously announced that it was renaming its Broadway home, until now known as the Biltmore Theatre, the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre in recognition of the pioneering Broadway publicist.
