BWW Review: BroadHollow Theatre Company's FORBIDDEN BROADWAY'S GREATEST HITS
by Melissa Giordano - Mar 8, 2018

It is a breath of fresh air seeing a production that is all about laughs and silliness. No message, no plot... just a terrific comedic cast making an audience forget about life for a bit. In BroadHollow Theatre Company's boffo showing of the off-Broadway hit Forbidden Broadway's Greatest Hits, they show the staunch theatre snobs that it's OK to have a sense of humor about their beloved shows. BWW Review: PANAMA The Musical, The First Original English Musical With An All Panamanian Cast!
by Cindy Sibilsky - Mar 1, 2018

If you're visiting Panama in early 2018, there's no escaping Panama The Musical, hailed as 'A Roaring Twenties Musical with a Latin heartbeat,' debuting February 1-March 4, 2018, with the World Premiere on February 22nd. Even before landing, COPA Airlines, a sponsor, plays  a dazzling trailer - the first tease. Then, on a walk through the terminal, stroll through the Casco Viejo or expedition to the famous Canal, posters featuring the Panamanian cast greet you everywhere, for #VisitPanama is also a sponsor. The Minister of Tourism, Gustavo Him, allocated a whopping $50,000 to support the marketing of this spectacle. And, if you happen to be staying at the chic, modern AC Hotel by Marriott in the financial district, another sponsor, you'll be welcomed by the smiling faces of the show's lovers, Tito and Melody. Reviewing the show for Broadway World - a first for both Panama and the publication's global reach - made not one, but four national news outlets and radio too. Even the Vice President herself, Isabel de Saint Malo de Alvarado, gave a heartfelt and rousing speech at the World Premiere, in English, which is historically significant, since it is not customary for politicians to deliver speeches in any other language than their native tongue in the homeland. All of these high profile sponsors and supporters have rallied behind the Panama The Musical and vocalized their belief in its value to the Nation. So what's the big deal? New musicals are a common occurrence. But for Panama, this is a first! (more...)

BWW Review: ENRON Engaging and Thought Provoking High Tech Entertainment
by Frank Benge - Feb 27, 2018

ENRON is a 2009 play by British playwright Lucy Prebble. The play is based on the financial scandal and eventual collapse of the American energy corporation, Enron, based in Houston,Texas. Enron executive Jeffrey Skilling (Annemarie Alaniz) and his boss Ken Lay (Kayla Johnson) are the main characters along with Skilling's protege Andy Fastow (Caroline Beagles), who rises to become the chief financial officer. Prebble's play is a heady mix of multimedia Razzle Dazzle, morality play and political satire. To avoid being dry as dust, Prebble has taken complex financial concepts and framed them in terms of the entertainment world: market analysts become a boy band, the Lehman Brothers are presented as Siamese twins, Arthur Anderson is a ventriloquist act, to name just a few. Capitalism is, in general, presented as the tricks and illusions of the sideshow con man. Spanning the years between 1992 and the present, Prebble's play does take some dramatic license. Prebble makes Jeffrey Skilling, Enron's top executive, the main villain, instead of founder Kenneth Lay. Skilling gets the top job because of his vision of the future: Enron won't just provide natural gas; it will trade in energy, the internet, video streaming and even the weather. Skilling makes Andy Fastow the chief financial officer when he comes up with the plan to create shadow companies to disquise Enron's escalating debts as assets. Eventually, the whole corrupt bubble bursts. (more...)

BWW Review: CoPlayers Theatre Hits One Out of the Park With YOU'RE A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN
by Jeffrey Ellis - Apr 10, 2018

Filled to overflowing with youthful energy and plenty of showbiz razzle-dazzle, CoPlayers Theatre's production of You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown - directed and choreographed by the peripatetic Tosha Pendergrast, easily the busiest musical theater choreographer in Middle Tennessee - does what so many other renditions of the show have failed to do over the years: Thoroughly entertain me! And, in so doing, Pendergrast and her ensemble of impressive young actors have erased from my preferred Charlie Brown vocabulary such words as boring, vapid and stultifying, instead replacing them with electrifying, engaging and fun (which normally should be written in all caps and followed by a surfeit of exclamation marks)! (more...)
