Today in 1963, Oliver! opened at Broadway's Imperial Theatre, where it ran for 774 performances. Oliver! is a British musical, with script, music and lyrics by Lionel Bart. The musical is based upon the novel Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens. It premiered in the West End in 1960, enjoying a long run, a successful Broadway production in 1963 and further tours and revivals. It was made into a musical film in 1968. Major London revivals played from 1994-1998 and again from 2008-2011.

Encores! Artistic Director Jack Viertel today announced the creative teams for New York City Center's 2016 Encores! season. J. Bernard Calloway, Chuck Cooper, Marva Hicks, Carly Hughes, LaChanze, Norm Lewis, Forrest McClendon, and J.D. Webster will star in Vernon Duke and John Latouche's jazz?filled fable Cabin in the Sky, running for seven performances at City Center from February 10-14. The 1940 musical will be directed by Tony Award winner Ruben Santiago?Hudson with choreography by Camille A. Brown.

Manhattan School of Music (MSM) recently announced the appointment of Kent Tritle, also the School's Director of Choral Activities, as Chair of its historic Organ Department. Tritle, who the New York Times has hailed as "the brightest star in New York's choral music world," is organist for both the New York Philharmonic (since 1994) and American Symphony Orchestra (since 1993), as well as serving as Director of Cathedral Music and Organist at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City. Russian Designer Valentin Fedorov, of Chibaksari Opera House and graduate of Bolshoi Theater Design School, created Moscow Ballet's fanciful 10” tall animal puppets, backdrops with 3-d effect and more. New costumes for Act I designed by Resident Designer Arthur Oliver, known for his work nationally and at Shakespeare & Company, are created by hand in St Petersburg by one of the world's oldest theatrical shops.  Moscow Ballet's Christmas production of the Great Russian Nutcracker will be in New York City at Kings Theater Saturday December 5, 3:00pmmatinee.
