WASHINGTON)—Washington National Opera (WNO) today announced details for the fourth season of the American Opera Initiative, its comprehensive commissioning program that brings contemporary American stories to the stage while fostering the talents of rising American composers and librettists. Three pairings of new opera composers and librettists—Christopher Weiss and John de los Santos, David Clay Mettens and Joshua McGuire, and Sarah Hutchings and Mark Sonnenblick—will premiere new one-act operas, each based on a contemporary American story, in a semi-staged concert performance on December 2, 2015 in the Kennedy Center Terrace Theater. Composer Luna Pearl Woolf and librettist Caitlin Vincent, an alumnus of the program's second season, will present their new hour-long work Better Gods—based on the life of Queen Lili'uokalani, the last monarch of Hawaii—on January 8 and 9, 2016 in the Terrace Theater.

Tony Award-winning costume designer, JESS GOLDSTEIN (currently represented on Broadway with Jersey Boys and On the Town), and scenic designer DOUGLAS W. SCHMIDT are among the 2015 TDF/Irene Sharaff Awards recipients. The awards will be presented at a ceremony on Friday, May 1, at 6:30pm, at the Hudson Theatre (145 West 44th Street). Mr. Goldstein was selected to receive the 2015 TDF/Irene Sharaff Lifetime Achievement Award for costume design and Mr. Schmidt will receive the Robert L.B. This summer, Brooklyn-based Spectacle takes over the Theater at MAD as part of the exhibition NYC Makers: The MAD Biennial, presenting 11 unconventional programs that highlight the organization's cross-disciplinary approach and DIY ethos. Presented via DCP restorations and beautiful studio library 35mm prints, with a focus on a single artist and their creative contribution to each film, Fasten Your Seatbelts is sure to be a truly rare movie-going event. In the summer of 2010, FSLC presented the first Fasten Your Seatbelts series to coincide with and celebrate 20th Century Fox's 75th Anniversary. The popularity of that series, including screenings of classics like ALL ABOUT EVE, M*A*S*H and ALIEN all but demanded that Film Society and the studio present a 'sequel' at some point.
