BWW Reviews: FADE TO BLACK PLAY FESTIVAL at The Queensbury Theatre Bold, Black & Brilliantly-Beautiful
by Bryan-Keyth Wilson - Jun 13, 2015
Last night I had the privilege to go to the 3rd annual FADE TO BLACK playwright's festival. Houston has its share of fringe events, but there wasn't a playwright's festival celebrating the works of black playwrights until Denise O'Neal conceived the FADE TO BLACK festival. In their 3rd year of operation, the FADE TO BLACK festival is on the rise and serves as a platform for the creative voices of black theatre artists of the future. Not only do the playwrights get the chance to show their work, actors and directors have an opportunity to flex their creative muscles. An esteemed panel of judges read a lot of plays and narrowed it down to 10 titles that were rehearsed and presented last night.

by BWW News Desk - Apr 24, 2011
WESTPORT COMMUNITY THEATRE presents the Connecticut premiere of a captivating romantic comedy, 'Mixed Couples,' that asks the question - what if the right person you married met the wrong person you didn't? Or did? The year is 1927 - and two couples meet for the first time since they were married. To each other... Bootleg liquor flows, and James Prideaux' clever, witty chess match, directed by Jessica Denes, revives verbal sparring to an art - with a twist. The production will end on April 24.

Westport Community Theatre Holds Auditions for MIXED COUPLES, 2/13-14
by Nicole Rosky - Feb 14, 2011
The time is 1927, the place an airplane hangar in New Jersey where two couples wait for the fog to lift so their chartered plane can fly them to Washington. Their meeting is quite by chance, but also ironic, as it develops that the four had switched partners twenty-five years earlier, and haven't seen each other since. One couple has settled into suburban bliss, he a professor, she a housewife and mother; the other couple are Park Avenue types, he a rich, hard-driving businessman, and his wife (after all these years) still an aspiring actress. Cautious and civil at first, their conversation turns gradually bitchier (and funnier) as time hangs heavy, bootleg liquor flows, and old enmities are revived. As their veneers crumble, it is clear that neither couple has benefited as much as they had expected from their marital switch, and that beneath their pretense lies aridity, although tempered by the witty hijinks they go through to convince themselves (and us) that all's well in their reordered worlds. Performance Dates are April 8 - April 24, 2011 at 8:00 PM.

John Herrera Anchors the Engaging, Tricky 'Medium at Large'
by Paul W. Thompson - Oct 22, 2008
After extensive development in New York at the York Theatre and the Vineyard Theatre, the world premiere of the musical 'The Medium at Large' took place Sunday afternoon, October 19, 2008, at the Village Players Performing Arts Center in Oak Park, Illinois, just over Chicago's western border. Starring Tony Award nominee John Herrera (Neville in 'The Mystery of Edwin Drood') as the titular spiritualist, the show shows promise in negotiating a tricky premise and an even trickier payoff.
