Victory Gardens Hosts Dynamic Public Programs Surrounding DEATH AND THE MAIDEN, 6/13-7/13

Victory Gardens Theater curates a special lineup of public programs in conjunction with its current production of Death and the Maiden by Ariel Dorfman, directed by Artistic Director Chay Yew. Each special program explores the themes and issues tackled in Death and the Maiden, including political and cultural oppression, prisoner treatment and police brutality, genocide and violence against marginalized groups in society. Death and the Maiden features Sandra Oh, Raul Castillo and John Judd and runs June 13 - July 13, 2014, with the press performance on June 20, 2014, at Victory Gardens Theater, 2433 N. Lincoln Avenue.

Musical theatre performers MARY LOU BARBER, EDWARD PLEASANT and BEN RAUCH will be performing dramatic readings of excerpts from The Very Reverend James Parks Morton's forthcoming memoir at the 12th Annual James Parks Morton Interfaith Awards gala tonight, June 5 at the New York Hilton Midtown. This is the first time in the history of the Interfaith Center of New York (ICNY) awards dinner that a theatrical event has been presented.

Carmen de Lavallade's career as a dancer, choreographer, and stage and film actress spans more than six decades working with luminaries such as Lena Horne, Josephine Baker, Harry Belafonte, Alvin Ailey, and many others. She already holds the distinction of the longest Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival performing career on record, having made her Pillow debut with Lester Horton Dance Theatre in 1953 and performing at the Festival as recently as 2004 (with Paradigm), and she now extends that record by another decade. In the world premiere of her new solo show, As I Remember It, de Lavallade combines powerful movement and poignant storytelling to weave a theatrical memoir about her venerable life on stage. This exclusive engagement opens the 2014 Festival in the Doris Duke Theatre with a limited three-show run, June 20-22.

Riccardo Muti, the preeminent conductor and the music director of the world-renowned Chicago Symphony Orchestra, returns to Chicago in late January for two weeks of CSO subscription programs. Concerts with Maestro Muti begin on Thursday, January 30 at 8 p.m. and continue on January 31 and February 1. This program—on which Muti and the CSO are joined by cellist Yo-Yo Ma and composer and cellist Giovanni Sollima—includes Schubert's Symphonies No. 3 and 4 along with the world premiere of a commissioned work for two cellos and orchestra by Giovanni Sollima. Maestro Muti's association with Sollima goes back over a decade, and includes previous performances together, as well as two prior world premieres: from Teatro alla Scala, which resulted in Sollima's Tempesta e Ritratti, premiered by Maestro Muti in 2001, and from Ravenna, for which Sollima composedPassiuni, premiered by Muti and the Cherubini Orchestra in 2008.

The 2014 Short Film program is comprised of 66 short films selected from a record 8,161 submissions (59 more than for the 2013 Festival).
