Anna Netrebko Leads MACBETH, Opening Tonight at The Met

Anna Netrebko sings her first North American performances of the charismatic villainess of Verdi's Macbeth this season, in starry cast that also includes Željko Lu?i? as Macbeth, Joseph Calleja as Macduff, and René Pape as Banquo. Met Principal Conductor Fabio Luisi will lead all seven performances of the opera, which opens tonight, September 24 in a revival of noted Shakespeare director Adrian Noble's 2007 production. The October 11 matinee performance will launch the ninth season of the Met's Live in HD series when it is transmitted worldwide to more than 2,000 movie theaters in 68 countries around the world.

Merrimack Repertory Theatre (MRT) will be celebrating its 35th season with a black-tie gala tonight, June 21. Congresswoman Nicola Tsongas will present the Paul Tsongas Award to UMass Lowell Chancellor Marty Meehan in recognition of his long-time personal support and his continued work to build and expand MRT's partnership with UMass Lowell. The event will also feature the Reduced Shakespeare Company presenting 'The Complete History of MRT (abridged),' a 10-minute sketch created especially for this event.

Paper Mill Playhouse concludes its 75th Anniversary Season with America's favorite musical, GREASE. With book, music and lyrics by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, Grease will be directed by Daniel Goldstein with original choreography by JoAnn M. Hunter. Additional songs are by John Farrar, Barry Gibb, Scott Simon and Louis St. Louis. Grease will play the Millburn, New Jersey, theater from May 28 through June 29, 2014. Beginning March 24, three Met stars will sing their first company performances of the leading roles in Andrea Chénier, Giordano's tragic love story set during the French Revolution. Gianandrea Noseda conducts his first company performances of the opera, which will star Marcelo Álvarez in the title role of the real-life poet executed by revolutionary forces; Patricia Racette as the aristocrat Maddalena, whose privileged life is overturned by the revolution; and Željko Lu?i? as Carlo Gérard, a servant who becomes a leader of the insurrection.
