'Boston harbor, 1895, a gray morning, the deck wet, the iron all beaded with frost, all the longshoremen in heavy pea-jackets, the whole ship in a bustle, and the favored first-class passengers just leaving. Among the hundreds of people going and coming, pushing and hauling, stands Nora, an Irish girl, her knitted hood already covered with frost, and tears hanging from her black eyelashes.

Count me among the many who consider Wilde's 1895 manners masterpiece to be the funniest play ever penned in the English language. Unfortunately, I've seen too many productions that seemed so focused on petty annoyances like character development and acting choices that they've missed the obvious fact that Earnest is a vehicle for some of Wilde's most t-shirt and coffee mug worthy witticisms:

Coal Creek Community Theater of Louisville, CO presents Voice of the Prairie, written by John Olive and directed by Linda Orr. The play, spanning three decades, from 1895, through the early days of radio in 1923, centers on the adventures of Davey Quinn and Frankie, the Blind Girl, as re-told some 30 years later by the now middle-aged David Quinn. Quinn becomes famous sending his stories into the 'Ethernet' through the infant industry of radio as 'The Voice of the Prairie.' Frankie hears Davey?s stories and reenters his life as the FCC threatens them all for broadcasting without a license.

Opening on the Mainstage will be Rodgers and Hammerstein?s musical masterpiece Carousel from June 17 through July 11. BSC will present its first thriller, the Tony Award-winning play Sleuth by Anthony Shaffer, from July 16 through August 1. Tennessee Williams? landmark play A Streetcar Named Desire will conclude the Mainstage summer season from August 6 through 29. The Mainstage fall show will be announced at a later date. On Stage 2, receiving its world premiere is Mark St. Germain?s Freud?s Last Session from June 10 through 28. Glen Berger?s hit Off-Broadway play Underneath the Lintel will play on Stage 2 from July 8 though 26.

Adapted for the stage by Karen Abbott, MUFARO'S BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTERS is part of the Discovery Theater Series for Families at PlayhouseSquare. When a great African king desires a wife, only the most perfect maidens in the land are invited to meet him. Mufaro, a dignified and caring African villager, has two beautiful daughters. When he leaves for the hunt and the sisters are alone, Manyara is always angry, while Nyasha is positive and kind. Chenzira, a messenger, brings word that the Great King is inviting all of the 'Most Worthy and Beautiful Daughters in the Land to appear before him' so that he might choose his Queen. Mufaro is very pleased that both of his daughters should be selected and agrees to accompany them at sunrise. That night, Manyara, believing herself better and prettier than her sister, sets out alone so that she can be presented to the king first. What will happen to each girl as she responds to hooting owls, enchanted trees laughing and the other strange beings she encounters along the way? DCT's Executive Artistic Director and director of the play, Robyn Flatt, states, 'This wonderful folktale celebrates virtue and kindness of the heart. Its ethical lesson is simple yet powerful: ?as you sow so shall you reap', or as a hungry beggar in the play says, ?pretty is as pretty does'.'

The complete company of the Royal Court Theatre's critically acclaimed production of Anton Chekhov's THE SEAGULL, in a new version by Christopher Hampton, will begin rehearsals on Monday, August 25 in London, under the direction of Ian Rickson.

THE SEAGULL, featuring a new version by Christopher Hampton and directed by Ian Rickson, opens Wednesday, October 1 at the Walter Kerr Theatre (219 West 48th Street). Previews will begin Tuesday, September 16. The production will play a strictly limited engagement of 14 weeks through December 21.
