Hailed as "one of the great amateur choruses of our time (New York Today) for its "full-bodied sound and suppleness (The New York Times)," The Dessoff Choirs culminates its 93rd season with a "Freedom Concert" inspired by the late Coretta Scott King (b. April 27, 1927), wife of Martin Luther King Jr., and advocate for African-American equality.

At the laying of Carnegie Hall's cornerstone in 1890, Andrew Carnegie said that "all good causes may here find a platform." At no time during Carnegie Hall's history were those words better represented than in the 1960s when voices were raised in protest, singing out to be heard. Throughout this pivotal decade, among the more than 3,600 events, was an extraordinary variety of benefits and tributes for social causes that used Carnegie Hall's stage as a platform from which to raise funds or awareness.

The Mississippi Museum of Art (the Museum) and Tougaloo College (the College) are presenting Now: The Call and Look of Freedom, the inaugural exhibition of the Art and Civil Rights Initiative (the Initiative) through May 15, 2018. The Initiative, funded by the Henry Luce Foundation and launched in December 2017, is a multi-layered, multi-year partnership that leverages the art collections of both institutions to foster community dialogue and interpretation about civil rights issues, past and present.  Romare Bearden. My Right is a Future of Equality with Other Americans, from The Negro Woman series, 1947 Now: The Call and Look of Freedom is on view at the Tougaloo College Art Gallery in The Bennie G. It is the first in a series of four exhibitions over two years drawing from the collections of the College and the Museum to be mounted alternatively at both institutions. The exhibition is curated by LaTanya Autry, Curator of Art & Civil Rights, a joint position she holds with the College and the Museum. 

San Francisco International Arts Festival is delighted to present the world premiere of DOWN BY THE RIVERSIDE Requiem for a King composed by Anthony Brown with original spoken word by Angela Davis performed by the Asian American Orchestra and vocal ensemble Voices Of A Dream.

THE LOST TAPES: MALCOLM X relives the pivotal years of this trailblazing activist using rarely seen footage and audio tapes, including never-before-seen footage of Nation of Islam rallies and recordings made at the Audubon Ballroom on the day of his assassination. THE LOST TAPES: MALCOLM X premieres Monday, February 26 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Smithsonian Channel.

The iconic folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary made music together for nearly 50 years. In this intimate evening of song and reflection, Peter and Paul perform their enduring anthems of social change, including "If I Had a Hammer," " Blowin' in the Wind," and "Puff the Magic Dragon," among others. They will also remember their contributions to the civil rights movement and the woman who completed their trio of positivity, the late Mary Travers.

Carnegie Hall's The '60s: The Years that Changed America, a citywide festival from January 14-March 24, 2018, continues in February with an exciting array of events to be presented at Carnegie Hall and at more than 35 leading partner cultural institutions throughout New York City and beyond. This special exploration of the '60s invites audiences to explore this turbulent decade through the lens of arts and culture, including music's role as a meaningful vehicle to inspire social change.

This February, the world-famous Apollo Theater will host a series of artistic and community programs celebrating Black History Month. Since its inception in 1934, the legendary Theater has celebrated and provided a platform for emerging African American talent as one of the first theaters to integrate, and has since been a catalyst for rising artists of diverse backgrounds.

Black History Month is a prime time to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination in Memphis, TN. What better way to honor this historical event than by attending the West Coast Premier theatrical production of The Watsons Go To Birmingham - 1963. This is a play Adapted by Reginald Andre Jackson. Based on the Newberry and Coretta Scott King Honor Book novel by Christopher Paul Curtis.  This Comedy/Drama production is an All The Way West Productions, Inc. with Harry Jones, Jr. as producer and making her directorial debut, Bernadette Speakes.

Smithsonian Channel Examines The Life And Death Of An Iconic Civil Rights Activist In THE LOST TAPES: MALCOLM X

Mixed Magic Theatre has added two performances of a dramatic reading of Dr. Martin Luther King's letter from Birmingham City Jail, directed by Ricardo Pitts-Wiley on Saturday, January 27th at 7:30 PM and Sunday, January 28th at 2:00 PM.

The Broadway musical, I Have a Dream, first debuted in 1976 with Billy Dee William playing Dr. King. The play portrays the life of Dr. King and important moments of the civil rights movement through song and dance. Written by Josh Greenfield and directed by veteran actor Herman LeVern Jones of TheatreSouth, the production has toured internationally. It includes many gospel songs from the Civil Rights Movement, including We Shall Overcome and Free at Last to be performed by professional soloists and the Fresh Start Church Gospel Choir of Glen Burnie. Coretta Scott King and Rosa Parks praised the show when they saw it in the 1980's. Order tickets at www.mlkjrmd.org. The two act musical begins at 7:00 pm Saturday, January 13 at the Key Auditorium of St. Johns College, 60 College Avenue, Annapolis. For more information, call 301-904-3690. January 13, 2018, with an added performance on MLK Day, January 15th. Adapted for the stage by Jerome Hairston, with music by Victor Zupanc, the show is inspired by four of Keats' most beloved stories, including the 1963 Caldecott Award-winning The Snowy Day. The show celebrates the wonder of childhood in the city - from making tracks in the freshly fallen snow, to learning how to whistle, to imagining new worlds with a best friend who lives across the hall - these small moments of delight and joy are captured beautifully. Incorporating shadow puppets, songs, mime and humor, the 45 minute show for children will appeal to all ages.

Mixed Magic Theatre presents its annual dramatic performance of Dr.King's remarkable letter which demands accountability from church, business and political leaders in an effort to effect change. Join Mixed Magic Theatre as we celebrate these words that helped articulate the realities, visions, and aspirations of America's most important social movement. Screenwriter and LGBTQ rights activist Dustin Lance Black (Milk, When We Rise) is set to receive the Writers Guild of America West's 2018 Valentine Davies Award in recognition for his civil and human rights efforts, which have positively impacted the LGBTQ community.
