It's a complicated time in a confusing culture for members of the New York City Hair tribe; the Vietnam War has brought a counterculture revolution that vexes many of these youthful Americans. Still, as an audience member watching the conflicted free spirits, I felt more confused about the overall production than any individual characters felt about their choices.

The Blank Theatre opens its 26th season with a new work written and directed by founding artistic director Daniel Henning that explores one of the most controversial events in U.S. history - the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. THE TRAGEDY OF JFK (as told by Wm. Shakespeare) is the result of several decades of research during which time Henning has come to be recognized as an authority on the subject. That, combined with his other great obsession - live theatre - meant it was only a matter of time before LA audiences would see a stage play based on his work.

He is now on the short list of the foremost rock photographers in the world, but back in 1968 Ethan Russell was a young aspiring American writer with a Nikon camera and photography hobby. He had studied at UC Davis and was now living in London. Mick Jagger asked him to take his picture, and the rest is history: within a few years, Ethan Russell became a multi-Grammy-nominated photographer, director, and author. Jagger noted, 'We trusted Ethan as an artist, which made him invisible to us, and which allowed his photographs to capture our most intimate moments.' On May 20, Ethan Russell will bring such moments to the Harris Center stage, along with his own story and phenomenal photographs. The presentation kicks off a six-week exhibit of Mr. Russell's work at the Bank of America Gallery within the Harris Center for the Arts.

The cast, or tribe as they preferred to be called, of Schenectady Light Opera Company's production of Hair is certainly letting it all out to shine for us in this restaging of the 1968 Broadway game changer.
