LABA: Laboratory for Jewish Culture and Mystical Feet Company present The Mar Vista, a dance/theater work written and choreographed by Yehuda Hyman in collaboration with the Mystical Feet Company (Ron Kagan, Dwight Kelly, Ryan Pater, Ezra Lowrey, Amanda Schussel and Hyman) at The Theater at the 14th Street Y, 344 E. 14th Street, from December 1-18, 2016.  Performance schedule: Thursday-Saturday at 8pm, Sunday at 3pm. A new musical version of the classic movie comes to the stage for the holiday season. The story  takes place in the 1940s in Indiana and focuses on a child named Ralphie, a daydreamer who spends his days counting down to Christmas. He wants a Red Ryder BB Gun, but as his parents and teachers warn him, "You'll shoot your eye out!"  All of the movie's best-loved moments are here, including the Old Man's leg-shaped lamp, the tongue-on-a-flagpole scene, the bunny suit, the Santa slide and all of Ralphie's extravagant daydreams. It's a big Broadway musical, complete with dazzling dance numbers and gorgeous sets. (more...)

ESPN Adds First-Ever Televised Wimbledon Qualifying This June

Violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter and Pianist Lambert Orkis to Tour the U.S., Spring 2017

Globally-renowned violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter and her longtime musical partner pianist Lambert Orkis give 11 performances across the United States in Spring 2017. The duo have spent nearly 30 years making music together, resulting in numerous successful Deutsche Grammophon recordings, earning Grammy® Awards, an ECHO Award, as well as a Choc de l'Année Award. The recital program will be played in seven cities including San Francisco's Davies Symphony Hall, New York's Carnegie Hall and Washington DC's Kennedy Center, with a program including works by Sebastian Currier – who previously wrote a number of other works for Mrs. Mutter such as Aftersong (1994) and Ringtone Variations (2013) - Mozart, Respighi, and Saint-Saëns. Mrs. Mutter concludes the tour with a four-date engagement with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Andris Nelsons, where the concert program features selections by Tchaikovsky and Nostalghia by Toru Takemitsu, which Mrs. Mutter played at her 35th Anniversary concert of her Japanese debut. On February 27, 2017, the Dramatists Guild of America, Inc. will hold its annual Awards Night at the French Institute / Alliance Francaise in New York City and among the other honors given that night, an award from the Dramatists Legal Defense Fund will be presented to producer Jeffrey Seller, director Thomas Kail, author Lin-Manuel Miranda, and the cast of Hamilton, for exercising their right to free speech by reading a statement directed at Governor and Vice President-elect Mike Pence, who was in attendance, at the November 18, 2016 performance. It's difficult to see where creator, writer and director of "Storyville Rising", currently playing at Seattle Immersive Theatre, David Crellin was trying to go with his show. I mean, it's certainly a fascinating look, supported by some wonderful performances, into the world of the red light district in New Orleans at the turn of the century and all the seedy undertones it had to offer, but it lacks a through line to pull it all together.
