A Magic Flute, Peter Brook's production with the acclaimed Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord, was awarded France's esteemed Molière Award for best musical theater at a ceremony on Sunday, April 17 in Paris. Lincoln Center Festival 2011 will present the U.S. Premiere of A Magic Flute, an intimate 90-minute, fully-staged adaptation of the beloved Mozart opera, in sixteen performances July 5-17 at the Gerald W. Lynch Theater. Like his ground-breaking La Tragédie de Carmen (which was performed in New York at the Vivian Beaumont Theater in 1983), Brook's free interpretation of The Magic Flute, performed by an ensemble of two actors and alternating casts of seven singers with pianist, is a poetic invocation with its spare and subtle staging shedding new, vibrating light on Mozart's masterpiece.

The French Institute Alliance Fran aise (FIAF), New York's premier French cultural and language center, today announced the 2019 Crossing the Line Festival, featuring 11 performances and a gallery exhibition from a geographically, generationally, and artistically diverse group of artists whose work transcends genres and boundaries. All performances are world, US, or New York premieres; they are united by their convention-breaking fearlessness as they confront topics from social injustice to personal demons. Many of the performances pay homage to legendary artists of our time and previous eras, while the theme of migration and its transformational effects on identity informs several others. The festival runs from September 12 to October 12. Ticket are available at crossingtheline.org.

MasterVoices continues its 2019-20 season on Thursday April 2, at the Rose Theater at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Artistic Director Ted Sperling will lead a concert staging of Bizet's Carmen in its original Opéra Comique version, with dialogue rather than recitative, sung in English translation by award-winning Broadway lyricist Sheldon Harnick. His translation of Carmen was commissioned and premiered by the Houston Grand Opera in 1981 and served as the English text for Peter Brook's ingenious 90-minute La tragédie de Carmen which was performed at the Vivian Beaumont Theater in New York in 1984. The MasterVoices performance will mark the New York premiere of the full translation.
