Theatre Under The Stars (TUTS) is proud to announce the cast of Smokey Joe's Cafe, playing July 14 - 19 for TUTS' 48th consecutive year of offering FREE musical theatre at Miller Outdoor Theatre.

The 69th Annual Tony Awards are this Sunday June 7th at 8/9c hosted by Kristin Chenoweth and Alan Cumming. It's the biggest award show of the Broadway season and it closes out a long award season for Broadway and Off-Broadway musicals and plays. We can't help but wonder what chances this year's Best Musical and Best Play nominees have of taking home the ultimate prize. 

The 5th Avenue Theatre joins with producing partner Pasadena Playhouse in welcoming Emily Padgett (Broadway: Side Show, Rock of Ages), Thom Sesma (Broadway: The Times They are A-Changin', Man of La Mancha), J. Elaine Marcos (Broadway: Annie, Priscilla Queen of the Desert), and Thai superstar Bie Sukrit to lead the cast of the world premiere of WATERFALL, an epic new Broadway bound musical love story, featuring a distinguished international creative team and a cast of 20. Performances at Pasadena Playhouse take place tonight, May 29, through June 28, 2015, followed by a Seattle run October 1-25, 2015.

Awards shows are catnip for entertainment enthusiasts around the world not only because they are a celebration of the best of the breed in whatever medium or genre the presentation recognizes but also because a live telecast with so many stars and so many categories allows for ample room for entertainment - and error. In Tony Awards history, there have been a few unmistakably unmissable moments that live on thanks to the magic of YouTube for a variety of reasons - thrilling battles to the finish in tight categories, chilling reactions from non-winners when the top prize is announced, and, of course, some very unusual albeit unforgettable ties and inconsistent category tweaks. Nevertheless, the Tony Awards is always the biggest night of the year for Broadway babies and this year should prove to be no exception with the hot competition and spectacular stars scheduled to appear on June 7 at Radio City Music Hall and presented to the world, once again, via CBS at 8 PM.

On Monday, May 18th, the Theater People Podcast welcomes IT SHOULDA BEEN YOU star Lisa Howard. Lisa made her Broadway debut as Rona Lisa Peretti in the 2006 Tony nominated production of 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE. From there she has been seen on Broadway in SOUTH PACIFIC, PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT, and 9 TO 5. In IT SHOULDA BEEN YOU, Howard has received glowing notices and a Drama Desk Award nomination for her turn as Jenny, older sister of the Bride who's gone out of her way to plan the perfect wedding. Despite acting alongside Broadway favorites like Tyne Daly, Harriet Harris, and Sierra Boggess, much has been made of IT SHOULDA BEEN YOU being a star making vehicle for Howard. 

On Monday, May 11 the Theater People podcast welcomes 2015 Tony-nominee, Tony Yazbeck. Currently starring in the critically acclaimed and Tony nominated Broadway revival of ON THE TOWN, Tony opens up about how the role first came to him for the 2008 Encores production, his experience with the pre-Broadway run at Barrington Stage, and how, as a true triple threat, he was particularly suited to play the role on Broadway.

Segerstrom Center for the Arts is rolling out plans for its 30th Season, beginning with the 2015 - 2016 Broadway line-up. It will be a year of extraordinary artists, blockbuster shows and world renowned companies: great dance and Broadway hits, jazz, cabaret and classical music, family entertainment plus many special guests and events.

Following a record-breaking 2014/15 season, Broadway San Jose, a Nederlander Presentation, announced last night the six productions that will comprise the lineup for the 2015/16 season.

The UK premiere of Kinky Boots, the feel-good multi award-winning musical, will open in the West End on 15 September at the Adelphi Theatre, with previews from 21 August 2015. With a book by four-time Tony Award-winner Harvey Fierstein, music and lyrics by pop icon Cyndi Lauper, and direction and choreography by two-time Tony Award-winner Jerry Mitchell, Kinky Boots won the2013 Tony Award for Best Musical, and the 2014 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album. Tickets at the Adelphi Theatre go on sale from Monday 2 March 2015.

Following a critically acclaimed run in Stratford in 2013, the Royal Shakespeare Company and English Touring Theatre's production of Thomas Middleton's A Mad World My Masters returns in 2015 for an eight venue national tour to Wolverhampton Grand Theatre (26 - 28 February), Grand Theatre Blackpool (5 - 7 March), Theatre Royal Brighton (10 - 14 March), Malvern Theatres (24 - 28 March), Hall for Cornwall (31 March - 4 April), Theatre Royal Bath (7 - 11 April), Darlington Civic Theatre (14 - 18 April), and Cambridge Arts Theatre (21 - 25 April), before a limited run at the Barbican (29 April - 9 May).

At first glance, the musicals THE COLOR PURPLE, CALVIN BERGER, and LA CAGE AUX FOLLES may not seem to have much in common. The settings couldn't be more different - the rural South in the early 20th century, a modern day high school, and a drag club in 1970s France. But since I happened to see them all on the same weekend, I couldn't help but draw parallels between them. All three musicals all speak to themes of beauty, identity, self-worth, and having the courage to be who you really are, despite what the world is telling you. In THE COLOR PURPLE, a young, poor, black woman is told that she's ugly and worthless, but after a lifelong journey she arrives at a place of strength and self-love. CALVIN BERGER sets the classic play Cyrano de Bergerac in a modern high school, where a young man feels that his large nose prevents him from getting what he wants in life and chooses to hide behind the handsome popular guy, both of whom eventually learn it's better to be loved for who you are. Finally, in LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, a middle aged man who feels more comfortable dressed as a woman is asked by his own son to hide who he is, but confidently declares 'I am who I am!' Another thing these three musicals have in common is that they can all currently be seen on Twin Cities stages featuring talented local casts. Best described as a groundbreaking celebration of women who are on the brink of, in the middle of or have survived 'The Change', Menopause The Musical is sure to leave audiences inspired and laughing long after the show.

While the annual ceremony wouldn't be as geared toward theatre people as, say, the Tony Awards (June 7th on CBS for those who need a heads-up), this year is a bit different, with a collection of nominees having Broadway experience, and a few films up for nods having ties to theatre as well.

The Muny announced today the directors, choreographers and music directors for the Muny's 2015 Season, which opens on June 15 with My Fair Lady. Fifth Third Bank Broadway in Atlanta presents the Atlanta premiere of Dirty Dancing - The Classic Story On Stage at the Fox Theatre, beginning tonight, November 25.

Alastair Brookshaw, Nic Kyle and Zoë Doano are to head the cast for the European première of Jerry Herman's 1979 Broadway musical, The Grand Tour, directed by Thom Southerland, at the Finborough Theatre as part of the 20 Premières Season.

Tony Award nominee Tony Sheldon (Priscilla Queen of the Desert) has joined the cast of the Encores! Special Event The Band Wagon in the role of Jeffrey Cordova, an egotistical British director. (Roger Rees, previously announced in the role, is no longer available.) The Band Wagon cast stars Tony Award winner Brian Stokes Mitchell, seven-time Emmy Award winner Tracey Ullman, Academy Award nominee Michael McKean, Tony Award nominee Laura Osnes, Tony Award nominee Michael Berresse and Don Stephenson. The Band Wagon will open on Sunday, November 8.

Opening in 1979, The Grand Tour marked Jerry Herman's return to Broadway after almost a decade away. It finally gets its European premiere, directed by Thom Southerland, at the Finborough Theatre as part of the theatre's 20 Premieres Season.

Special Event from November 6 - 16, 2014 at City Center. The Band Wagon will open on Sunday, November 8.
