Do you remember that cataclysmal moment in the Stanley Kubrick film of Stephen King's “The Shining,” when Jack Nicholson axes his way through the bathroom door and says, wild-eyed, “Here's Johnny!” Well, you won't find it in King's book--or in Mark Campbell's libretto for THE SHINING, the new opera written with composer Paul Moravec and directed by Eric Simonson, opening May 7 at the Minnesota Opera as part of its New Works Initiative.

Frank Farrell presents his adaptation of John Keats's only full-length play, retitled The Dark Ages: Otho the Great, based on the life of Otto I, German king in 936 CE and Holy Roman Emperor from 962 until his death in 973. The production depicts the tragic fate of Otho's valiant but hotheaded son Ludolph, whose unfaithful lover and her scheming brother induce him to rebel against his father and persecute his innocent cousin. The show runs 2 ½ hours with one intermission.

?Premiere Stages, the professional theatre company in residence at Kean University, has announced its four finalists for the 2016 Premiere Stages Play Festival, and will offer free public readings of the plays by professional actors during its 12th Annual Spring Readings Series. The readings will take place Thursday, March 10 through Saturday, March 12 at 7:00 pm and Sunday, March 13 at 3:00 pm in the Murphy Dunn Theatre, located in Vaughn Eames Hall on Kean's central campus (1000 Morris Avenue, Union, N.J.).

Producers David Mirvish and Barry & Fran Weissler just announced that the Tony Award-winning Best Musical TITANIC, with music and lyrics by Maury Yeston and book by Peter Stone, will finally have its Canadian premiere in a brand new production directed by Thom Southerland. TITANIC will play a six-week engagement at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto, from July 22 through August 31. TITANIC will then berth on Broadway in the Fall of 2014.

Roundabout Theatre Company has officially announced that Oscar nominee Michelle Williams will star for the first time on Broadway as 'Sally Bowles' in its upcoming production of Cabaret. She will take the stage at Studio 54 alongside Alan Cumming as the Emcee, reprising the role that won him a Tony Award in 1998.

This year's readings will feature the 2013 Premiere Stages Play Festival finalists Brownsville Song by Kimber Lee (Lark Playwrights' Workshop, Ma-Yi Writers Lab), Soldier's Heart by Tammy Ryan (Primus Prize Winner for Lost Boy Found in Whole Foods), Ontario Was Here by Darren Canady (Jeff Award-nominated Brothers of the Dust), and The Beautiful Dark by Erik Gernand (New Works Project Winner at T. Schreiber Studio). One new play will be read by professional actors each evening, and the public is encouraged to actively participate in the new play development process through post-reading dialogues with the writers.
