Judgment Day

Odon von Horvath’s seldom-performed, penultimate play from 1937 is an intriguing hybrid of theatrical genres: part moral fable, part sociopolitical comedy, part noirish thriller. A well-liked, dutiful train station master is momentarily distracted by a young woman and seconds later eighteen people are dead. Standing in the wreckage, he struggles with the overwhelming power of conscience found in the need for judgment and the repercussions felt by his local community.

Having dazzled Armory audiences and critics alike with his mesmerizing revival of THE HAIRY APE in 2017, visionary director Richard Jones returns to take on this gripping commentary about the responsibility to find the accurate truth in a new adaptation by Pulitzer Prize finalist and Obie Award-winning playwright Christopher Shinn. This new production dramatically plays on the interior of the Wade Thompson Drill Hall (reminiscent of the original Grand Central Depot and the great train stations of Europe) as an immersive environment in which the characters become overcome by the burden of guilt. The result is a fresh take on the portrait of a society struggling to take responsibility for its actions in a search for public retribution, themes that still resonate in today’s societal climate.

A favourite at the Proms since its first inclusion in the programme in 1956, Giuseppi Verdi's tribute to the Italian poet Alessandro Manzoni had a standalone performance this week, helmed by conductor Andres Orozco-Estrada. Verdi's Requiem has a strong connection with the Royal Albert Hall, having first been heard there in 1875 - just a year after its debut in Milan's San Marco church. Written for orchestra, double choir and four soloists, it was performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, London Philharmonic Choir and soloists Lise Davidsen (soprano), Dmytro Popov (tenor), Tomasz Konieczny (bass) and Sarah Connolly (mezzo-soprano) stepping in for Karen Cargill at short notice.

When discussing legendary psychedelic garage bands of the 1960s, the Chocolate Watchband is at the top of the list. The Chocolate Watchband formed in San Jose in 1965. The band's music was described as “a blend of 1960s-style garage and psychedelic rock with a distinguishable 'Rolling Stones'  San Francisco sound. Produced by Ed Cobb, the group's early music combined the influences of blues with a psychedelic edge that featured terse lyrics and  instrumental experimentation. The Chocolate Watchband appeared in the 1967 film “Riot On Sunset Strip” and the 1968 film “The Love Ins.” The band released three highly acclaimed LPs from 1967 to 1969 before disbanding in 1970. In 1999, they reunited at the San Diego event 66/99 in San Diego, CA,  organized by musician/journalist Mike Stax. They continue to play today at garage rock festivals in Europe as well as the States with Little Steven, The Yardbirds, Love, The Zombies, Bo Diddly, Iggy Pop, the Strawberry Alarm Clock and the Electric Prunes.
