Curtains up! AIR TWYLA propels Pacific Northwest Ballet into its new season with a trio of works by its first artist-in-residence, renowned choreographer Twyla Tharp. The program includes the world premiere of Waiting at the Station with a commissioned score by New Orleans music legend Allen Toussaint. Sharing the program with Waiting at the Station are the Scottish-inspired Brief Fling (a PNB premiere) and Tharp's homage to Ol' Blue Eyes and ballroom dance, the unforgettable Nine Sinatra Songs. AIR TWYLA runs for only seven performances, tonight, September 27 - October 6 at Seattle Center's Marion Oliver McCaw Hall.

The 13th annual installment of the Coney Island Film Festival (named one of the '25 Coolest Film Festivals' by MovieMaker Magazine) hits the shores of Coney Island from Friday, September 20th through Sunday, September 22nd. This year's festival features 88 films from around the world; a stunning array of high and low-brow fare, as diverse as the neighborhood it represents. Directing the season opener, Hank Williams: Lost Highway (October 11-November 3, 2013) will be Michael Serrecchia. The Game's Afoot (or Holmes for the Holidays) (December 13- January 5, 2014) will be directed by Robin Armstrong. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (January 24-February 16, 2014) will be directed by Emily Scott Banks. Spunk (April 11-May 4, 2014) will be directed by Akin Babatunde.Good People (June 6-29, 2014) will be directed by Rene Moreno and Dogfight (July 25-August 17, 2014) will be directed by Terry Martin.

Performers were originally brought to Goodspeed directly from New York City, typically by Steamboat. Though we are now brought by the Goodspeed Guild members in vans and buses, it is still exciting to come down the side of the river valley and near the swing bridge and see the towering Goodspeed Opera House on the other bank.

The sister program to the company's FRESH ART festival the weekend before, The CANNED Art weekend showcases work Fordham Alumni have finished creating, saved for prosperity in the can. A variety of feature length and short films, documentaries, as well as web-series and sketches will be shown. All screenings will be presented at the Wild Project (195 E. 3rd St., NYC). Fifty years ago this month, a team of expert climbers became the first Americans to summit Mt. Everest, the world's tallest mountain, in an expedition sponsored in part by the National Geographic Society. Two years after this historic climb, National Geographic released its first-ever television special, Americans on Everest, which followed this group of brave climbers from base camp to the top of the world.
