International AL JOLSON Society to Hold 17th Annual Long Island Festival on Aug 17 in Oceanside

On August 17, led by current Society President Jan Hernstat of Long Island, New York, the IAJS will hold its 17th annual Long Island Al Jolson Festival, from 9am to 4:30 pm, at Oceanside Knights of Columbus, 2985 Kenneth Place, Oceanside, NY 11572. Starring at this year's event will be Staten Island-based singer Tony Babino (known as “The Heart of Al Jolson) with Dave Gross at the Piano. Babino will be performing from 2:30-3:30. Also appearing will be Los Angeles-based entertainer Richard Halpern (called “Mr. Tin Pan Alley”), singer/songwriter Brian Gari, who is the grandson of the legendary Broadway star Eddie Cantor. This year's special guest will be the famed TV and radio talk show host Joe Franklin. There will also be a special Jolson DVD Presentation and a Society Auction consisting of donated memorabilia.

Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra Announce 12-Day Netherlands Tour

Benjamin Zander and the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra are immensely proud to announce a tour by the Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (BPYO) to The Netherlands. This trip is the culmination of an extraordinary founding year for the BPYO, and caps the successes the orchestra has had in Boston: two sold-out critically acclaimed performances at Symphony Hall and one at Sanders Theatre in Cambridge. The orchestra, comprising students aged 13 to 21, was founded with the intention of 'Shaping future leaders through music.' Boston can be proud that this week, in The Netherlands, these 116 students are cultural ambassadors for the USA.. The tour consists of: five performances at the highest level in the best concert halls in The Netherlands; a live national radio broadcast; working sessions, performances and social time with musicians from student orchestras ; a flash mob in the Amsterdam Metro system; and time for sight-seeing.

Cellist Alisa Weilerstein Joins LA Chamber Orchestra, 5/18 & 19

Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra's 44th season concludes with a flourish as Alisa Weilerstein, lauded by The New York Times as a 'brilliant young American cellist,' performs Shostakovich's thrilling Cello Concerto No. 1 in E-flat major, Op. 107, originally composed for legendary cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, on Saturday, May 18, 2013, 8 pm, at the Alex Theatre in Glendale, and Sunday, May 19, 2013, 7 pm, at Royce Hall, UCLA. Music Director Jeffrey Kahane, who conducts the program and has long been committed to championing artists early in their careers, also presents the US premiere of up-and-coming French composer Hugo Gonzalez-Pioli's The Love of Zero, an intriguing bassoon concerto, featuring LACO Principal Bassoon Kenneth Munday and played with Robert Florey's avant-garde 1927 short silent film of the same title. Gonzalez-Pioli, whose work adds a touch of Hollywood to the program, is a 2012 graduate of USC's prestigious Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television program.
