Composer and Conductor Ennio Morricone Suffers Back Injury; Postpones LA, Brooklyn Shows to June 2014

The Italian composer Ennio Morricone, who turned 85 in November, has suffered a back injury that has forced the postponement of concerts originally dated March 20 in Los Angeles and March 23 in Brooklyn. The shows have been rescheduled for June 13 at Cushman & Wakefield Theater at Barclays Center in Brooklyn and June 15 at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live, where he will conduct an ensemble of 200 musicians and singers in performances of his legendary film scores. The concerts will be, respectively, his first New York appearance since 2007 and his first-ever Los Angeles concert.

So utters the main character in Tom Murphy's famous play, The Gigli Concert, now on at Toronto's Young Centre for the Performing Arts through May 14th. Produced by Soulpepper Theatre Company, the line is key to understanding this epic yet intimate play. Though occasionally challenging, Nancy Palk's production is an ultimately rewarding evening of theater for what it reveals of the human capacities for healing and connection.

Richard Strauss's Arabella will return to the Met April 3 for its first company performances since 2001, conducted by Philippe Auguin and featuring a principal cast of rising stars and artists new to the Met. Swedish soprano Malin Byström, who made a notable Met debut in Gounod's Faust two seasons ago, will take the central role of the charming and much-courted Arabella. German baritone Michael Volle, a leading exponent of dramatic baritone roles in Europe, makes his Met debut as Mandryka, the suitor who offers Arabella security and devotion. Three additional European stars, German soprano Juliane Banse and tenor Roberto Saccà and Austrian bass-baritone Martin Winkler, make their respective Met debuts as Arabella's sister, Zdenka; Matteo, the young man Zdenka pines for despite his infatuation with her sister; and Waldner, the sisters' destitute father. Arabella will be performed in a revival of Otto Schenk's 1983 production. Erin Wall, the Canadian soprano who sang Helena in Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Met earlier this season, will star as Arabella in the April 24 performance.

Joe McGinniss, Sr., American author known for his best-selling The Selling of the President 1968 which described the marketing of then-presidential candidate Richard Nixon, has died at the age of 71. He authored eleven works, including his last bookwas The Rogue: Searching for the Real Sarah Palin, an account of Sarah Palin, the former governor of Alaska who was the unsuccessful 2008 Republican vice-presidential nominee.

The three operas that will have their first-ever Met performances, each staged by a director making his Met debut, are John Adams's The Death of Klinghoffer, conducted by David Robertson and directed by Tom Morris, opening October 20; Rossini's La Donna del Lago, conducted by Michele Mariottiand directed by Paul Curran, opening February 16, 2015; and Tchaikovsky's one-act operaIolanta, conducted by Valery Gergiev and directed by Mariusz Treli?ski. OMNI Ensemble Continues 31st Season on 3/1

The OMNI Ensemble will continue its 31st season of concerts in the recital hall at the Center for the Performing Arts at the College of Staten Island, 2800 Victory Boulevard on Thursday afternoon, February 27th at 2:30 pm, and at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music on Saturday evening, March 1, 2014 at 8:00 pm. Music Director/Flutist David Wechsler and cellist Brian Snow welcome harpsichordist Rebecca Pechefsky, and violinists Antonia Nelson and Caroline Chin in a program featuring Baroque and contemporary music played on period instruments for half the concert. Music performed will be J.S. Bach's Trio Sonata in G major, Francois Couperin's Trio Sonata La Superbe, Antonio Vivaldi's Sonata in G, Olga Nazaykinskaya's Trio Sonata, Mark Janello's Six Harpsichord Miniatures, and David Wechsler's Carmela'a Blue Fit for alto flute, violin, viola and cello. Continuing as the chamber music group in residence at the Brooklyn Conservatory, the OMNI Ensemble continues to perform concerts of enormous variety all designed to provide their audience with a musical diversity not ordinarily encountered by one chamber music group. Throughout the season they perform in the recital hall at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music.
