James Conlon to Conduct LADY MACBETH OF MTSENSK at the Met, 11/10-29

Conductor James Conlon leads a rare revival of Shostakovich's Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk at the Metropolitan Opera in six performances beginning Monday, November 10, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. The cast for Graham Vick's production includes soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek in the title role as Katerina Ismailova, tenor Brandon Jovanovich as Sergei, tenor Raymond Very as Zinovy Ismailov, and baritone Anatoli Kotscherga as Boris Ismailov. Tenor Frank van Aken sings the role of Sergei in the November 21 performance.

New York City Ballet's annual Fall Gala will once again celebrate ballet and fashion with a program that will include three world premiere ballets by Justin Peck, Liam Scarlett, and Troy Schumacher, as well as existing works by Peter Martins and Christopher Wheeldon, all featuring costumes designed by an international roster of some of the fashion world's most renowned talents: Thom Browne, Sarah Burton, Valentino Garavani, Carolina Herrera, and Mary Katrantzou. The one- time-only gala evening will take place tonight, September 23, 2014, opening New York City Ballet's four-week Fall Season at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center.

Orpheus Chamber Orchestra to Open Season at Carnegie Hall, 10/23

On Thursday, October 23 at 8 p.m., Orpheus Chamber Orchestra opens its 2014-15 concert series at Carnegie Hall with a program that includes Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 in C Minor, featuring Jonathan Biss, and Ellen Taaffe Zwilich's 1983 work Prologue and Variations in honor of her 75th birthday season. Written the same year Ms. Zwilich became the first female composer to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music, Prologue and Variations has been described by The New York Times as "splendidly crafted and shot through with a distinctly original utterance." The Carnegie program opens with the overture to Rossini's first opera, La cambiale di matrimonio, and closes with Poulenc's Sinfonietta.

According to the New York Times, Ravinia Festival music director James Conlon announced that he will depart his position after the 2015 season. He told NYT: "I have worked year-round, including every summer, since 1974. There are things I wish to accomplish, both musical and personal, and I need dedicated time to realize these projects."

From September 4-14, 2014, Houston Ballet launches its 45th season with the company premiere of John Neumeier's three-act ballet A Midsummer Night's Dream. The ballet is based on Shakespeare's lighthearted play of the same name and follows the hijinks and hilarity that ensues when a well-intentioned plan with a love potion goes awry. Created in 1977, A Midsummer Night's Dream has served as Mr. Neumeier's calling card, being seen as one of his most joyous and popular creations. Houston Ballet is the first American ballet company to perform the famous work and it is the first piece by Mr. Neumeier to enter the Houston Ballet repertoire.
