Harold and Maude is an idiosyncratic fable told though the eyes of the most unlikely pairing: a compulsive, self-destructive young man who attends funerals for entertainment and a devil-may-care, septuagenarian bohemian.

Through Colin Higgins' tale, we experience a way of seeing the world that looks directly into darkness, stresses our need for humour, the freedom to create, and kindness, while concluding that cynicism and despair are dead ends. Equal parts dark comedy and romantic innocence, Harold and Maude dissolves the line between darkness and light along with ones that separate people by class, gender and age.

It will be directed by Thom Southerland, and star Sheila Hancock.

Paul doesn't understand Corie's relaxed ways, and she'd like him to be just a bit more spontaneous. Even something as simple as running 'barefoot in the park' would be a start. Throw in a New York brownstone in constant disrepair, an eccentric neighbor, and a surprise visit from Corie's mother, and watching the ups and downs of married life has never been so enjoyable. BWW Review: HAROLD AND MAUDE Prove to be an Unlikely Pair of Mismatched Bodies with Identical Souls
by Shari Barrett - May 9, 2017

The romantic dramedy Harold and Maude incorporates elements of dark humor, centering around the exploits of a young man named Harold who is intrigued with his own death, often staging his own suicide to avoid dealing with his overbearing mother who wants nothing more than for Harold to find the 'right' woman to marry who can snap him out of his self-imposed depression and detachment from society. But of course, Harold finds his own way into the arms of romance with 79-year old Maude, a free-spirited woman who teaches 19-year old Harold about living life to its fullest, and eventually that life is the most precious gift of all, even though she has already made plans to end her own life on her own terms. BWW Review: HAROLD AND MAUDE at 2ND STORY THEATRE - Flower Power Lives!
by Larry O'Brien - Jul 5, 2016

In keeping with Artistic Director Ed Shea's avowed goal of staging less cynical plays, 2nd Story Theatre in Warren is offering the stage version of the 1971 cult film classic Harold and Maude by Colin Higgins, who wrote both the screenplay and this stage version, If you have never seen the film version, which starred Ruth Gordon and Bud Cort, you should get yourself over to Warren; if you have seen the film, you might want to go by a ticket to see what director Kevin Broccoli hath wrought. This production features some fine performances, a couple of almost magical special effects, and a story that is so dated it's current again. As Maude, charmingly played by Isabel O'Donnell, explains to Evan Kinnane's Harold in the second act, 'A cliche today is a profound truth tomorrow, and vice versa.' Somebody say, 'Amen.' (more...)

BWW Reviews: THOMAS HONECK Explores the Meaning of Life, Death, and Family During Intensely Personal Show at The Duplex
by Remy Block - Dec 5, 2014

Clad in all black and wearing a Dia de los Muertos mask, the pianist takes his seat. The cellist follows. From the back of the theater, the Grim Reaper wearing his black cape, white mask, and carrying his trademark scythe, seems to float through the audience, reminiscent of the way a priest enters a cathedral to celebrate a mass. Accompanied by Elton John's requiem-like instrumental, 'Funeral For a Friend' (from the 1973 album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road), the beginning of Thomas Honeck's show at the Duplex, Dancing with Death, starts as a macabre ritual.
