BWW Reviews: Two Small Theater Companies Impress - nimbus theatre's Delightfully Bizarre GHOST SONATA and Candid Theatre Company's Compelling True-Crime HAUPTMANN
by Jill Schafer - Nov 7, 2014

Readers of Broadway World Minneapolis are familiar with the big splashy Broadway tours that come through Minneapolis' Orpheum Theatre and St. Paul's Ordway Center for the Arts, as well as what's happening at our own big theaters like the Guthrie. But my goal as a Broadway World contributor is to make you aware of the great work that some of the smaller companies around town are doing. Two great examples right now are nimbus theatre, which does consistently good work as well as hosts other small companies at their Northeast Minneapolis home, and Candid Theatre Company, which recently won an Ivey for their new play DOGWOOD. nimbus' production of August Strindberg's Ghost Sonata combines original music, ingenious set design, and video projections to enhance the deeply layered 100 year old play. Candid's production of the historical true-crime drama HAUPTMANN presents a compelling story with the barest of sets and costumes. Both are worth your time and deserve a bigger audience than the ones I was a part of. Keep reading for more details on both shows. Moral of the story: don't be afraid to venture off the beaten path and give a new theater a try. You might discover something pretty great. (more...)

Classical Theatre Company Presents THE GHOST SONATA by August Strindberg
by BWW News Desk - Jan 10, 2017

Following 2012's production of Miss Julie, Classical Theatre Company will produce its second play by the Swedish great August Strindberg in The Ghost Sonata. This dark examination of family was originally produced in 1908 and has disturbed audiences ever since. "Strindberg had a very unhappy family life - particularly his childhood. This play was his attempt to exorcise those ghosts through this supernatural drama," says CTC chief John Johnston. "We're excited to bring this rarely produced play to our Houston audiences. We've done a good job over the years in exposing our audiences to age-old plays that they've never seen on stage before. Most theatergoers are familiar with his other plays like Miss Julie, The Father, or A Dream Play, but The Ghost Sonata was his last great play, and perhaps his most overlooked." (more...)

Theater's next generation of actors will come from all over the globe, to be certain, but one might find an impressive concentration of artists on the campus of the University of Southern California, where the list of candidates for the Master of Fine Arts in acting rivals any group to be found anywhere. Take Michael Khachanov, for example. Born in Azerbaijan, he grew up (from the age of 7 to 17) in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, and now calls Los Angeles as his hometown. As an undergraduate at Berkeley, he majored in business and economics, and now he finds himself in the midst of USC's MFA three-show repertory of plays while he and his classmates prepare for showcases in New York City and LA.
