Les Dames d'Escoffier will honor Philadelphia culinary pioneer Chef Esther McManus on Sunday, September 25th at Outstanding in Her Field, a new annual event to recognize talented women making a difference in the region's culinary field. The locally sourced harvest farm dinner will be set amidst the vines of Inn of Grace Winery (50 Sweetwater Road, Glen Mills) and paired with its fine wines and will celebrate McManus' artistry and legacy. McManus is a quiet and behind-the-scenes rockstar in the culinary world - she taught Julia Child how to make the perfect croissant, is considered by many to be the mother of Philly's artisan bread movement, and currently inspires legions of young cooks at the Restaurant School at Walnut Hill. Funds raised from the event will help fund scholarships for women entering the culinary field. Tickets are on sale now starting at $125 at http://bit.ly/tixlesdamesphl

CABARET's Tony Award-winning 1998 Broadway revival co-directed by Sam Mendes and Rob Marshall, still stands, arguably, as the show's definitive stage iteration. That same vibrant Roundabout Theatre Company production rightly serves as the basis for the newer 2014 revival that is now in the midst of a brand new North American national tour---currently performing at Orange County's Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa through August 21. Whether you're a fan of that amazing '98 revival or, better still, the iconic 1972 film adaptation, this brazenly confident new CABARET---a rousing combo-platter of the best elements of the show through its entire history---will surely entertain and, yes, even move you.

As America celebrates its 240th Birthday today, let's talk about what is probably one of the greatest musicals ever written, and it only came about 46 years before Hamilton. 1776 dramatizes the story of how John Adams was able to persuade his colleagues to vote for American independence as well as signing the Declaration of Independence. While the musical does dramatize the most important event in American history, the story behind the musical is probably just as interesting.

A total of four scholarships are being offered to children and teens for a Manhattan musical theatre program in July at the historic 13th Street Repertory Company, with two weeks of training and rehearsals that culminate in a fully staged performance there. With tuition for the nine days (10 a.m.-4 p.m.) of intensive skill building and preparation set for regular students at $750, those competing for the scholarships will be chosen based on their talent and motivation displayed at an audition and interview, as well as their submitted essays titled "Why Being in Theatre Is My Dream." The Edith O'Hara Summer Scholarships, with the full tuition waived, are named in honor of the founder of the 13th Street Rep, Edith O'Hara, who turned age 99 this year and still resides in the building of the organization she founded in 1972.
