Dracula

$77-$127

In winter of 2020, a thrilling new repertory cycle at CSC brings to life two legendary Gothic nightmares, Dracula and Frankenstein. Widely known as a pair of macabre fantasies about blood-sucking vampires and man-made monsters, these chilling stories more truly scratch at the fundamental human fears of love and betrayal, while exposing the even truer horrors of basic human nature.

Both terrifying and riotous, Kate Hamill’s Dracula confronts the sexism in Bram Stoker’s original work and subjugates it as a smart and disquieting feminist revenge fantasy. Kate’s signature style and postmodern wit upends this familiar tale of Victorian vampires and drives a stake through the heart of toxic masculinity.

A hilarious backstage farce and a genuinely affectionate look into the world of the theatre and the people who bring it to life. When The Playhouse, a rustic New England summer theatre, schedules a repertory season of Dracula, Hamlet and Charley's Aunt, comic mayhem and theatrical hell ensues. Faced with eccentric directors, a limited budget, and a challenging schedule, the troupe valiantly tries to keep the theatre afloat. We follow the well-intentioned but over-matched company as they go from outrageous auditions to ego-driven rehearsals, from technical nightmares to opening nights gone disastrously awry, from the elation of a great play well told to the comic and nostalgic season close. A riotous comedy for anyone who loves (or loves to be a part of) theatre!

Different Stages continues its 2019 - 2020 season with the premier of Rita Anderson's Gliders. With space flight on their minds, five women struggle to break free of the expectations and obstacles that confront them on earth. It will take every ounce of courage they have to bust through the atmosphere that contains them. Gliders is a magical exploration of what it feels like to be lost in space in a changing world as the cast 'glides' into and out of reality--and the present. '(S)he who does not know history is condemned to repeat it.'

'The Maria Callas of American musical theater,' as Opera News has called her, referencing both her crystalline voice and dramatic, expressive intensity, Melissa Errico is an actress, singer and author. First known for her starring roles on Broadway, her latest album, Sondheim Sublime, was called by The Wall Street Journal 'The best all-Sondheim album ever recorded.' Nothing in her work has been more constant than her association with Michel Legrand. Having starred in his sole Broadway show, 'Amour', she went on to collaborate with him on the iconic album 'Legrand Affair'. After his death in 2019, she was asked to write his eulogy by The New York Times - where she is a frequent contributor- and was then invited to become the sole American performer to participate in the extraordinary two-day memorial to Legrand held in April at Paris' Le Grand Rex Theatre, work that led one critic to announce that, 'Errico is, and will continue to be, the premier interpreter of the musical legacy of Michel Legrand.' This fall 2019, Ghostlight Records reissues her symphonic album, which Legrand arranged & conducted, as 'Legrand Affair Deluxe Edition.'
