BWW Interviews: SYESHA MERCADO, An 'American Idol' Turned 'Dreamgirl'
by Michael L. Quintos - Apr 21, 2010

During what was called 'Andrew Lloyd Webber week' of the seventh season of the hit TV talent competition American Idol, Webber predicted to an audience of millions that Syesha Mercado will 'bring the house down' with a sexy, splashy take on one of his many musical hits. And that, she did. Then 21, she eventually lasted on the show to become the second runner-up. Fast forward two years later, and she is now in the midst of a multi-city national tour of the rebooted DREAMGIRLS stage musical, where she nightly plays Deena Jones, the beautiful and eventual front-woman of the semi-fictional musical group The Dreams. Before she takes the stage of The Orange County Performing Arts Center (April 21-May 2), Mercado spoke with BroadwayWorld's Michael Lawrence Quintos about life on the road, her American Idol roots, and what it takes to become Deena Jones night after night.

Review - Cry-Baby: Deliriously Warped
by Michael Dale - May 3, 2008

Check your good taste at the door and have a blast at Cry-Baby, the deliriously warped new musical comedy based on the John Waters flick spoofing the culture clash between squares and juvies in 1950s Baltimore. While jokes about polio and sexually abusive priests and songs about tongue kissing may not be for everyone, this hilarious and spirited tuner serves up its crudeness and with extra helpings of whipped cream and sprinkles from the first notes of its revved-up overture to the final chord of the play-out music. I laughed for over two hours and when I looked down I saw my toes involuntarily tapping. It's a fun night out.

Groener, McGrath, Scalera & More Star In Sondheim's PUTTING IT TOGETHER At SCR 9/11-10/11
by BWW News Desk - Oct 11, 2009

South Coast Repertory kicks off the 2009-10 Season with Putting It Together, a compilation of Stephen Sondheim songs, that the composer put together like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, creating a narrative set at a cocktail party in an elegant Manhattan condo. The non-traditional musical, led by Broadway and television star Harry Groener, has a cast of five (a glamorous but slightly jaded couple, a starry-eyed younger couple and a savvy observer) who sing more than 30 songs that reflect their lives, lifestyles and moods of the moment. Some of the songs will be familiar, some less so, a few were even cut from their original musical scores, but they are all sophisticated, smart and drop-dead droll. All, in other words, Sondheim.
