Today, Wednesday, April 15, NYC Parks celebrates the 100th anniversary of the unveiling of the lovely Straus Memorial in Straus Park on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Open to the public 100 years ago, the monument memorializes Isador and Ida Straus who went down on the Titanic, three years to the day in 1912. The beloved monument was created by sculptor Augustus Lukeman (1872-1935) and architect Evarts Tracy, and was dedicated on April 15, 1915.

At a standing-room-only affair at Sanders Theatre, Longy School of Music of Bard College presented their second annual Sistema Side by Side Celebration on Friday, March 20, under the baton of the orchestra's newly appointed Music Director Jorge Soto. The evening was part of an ongoing series of events at Longy that pairs students (aged 8-14) from El Sistema-inspired music programs throughout Massachusetts with members of the Longy Conservatory Orchestra in rehearsals and performances featuring nationally renowned conductors and guest artists. Sunday 15 March marks the centenary of the date that George Llewelyn Davies died in action during the First World War. George was the eldest of the Llewelyn Davies children and, along with brother Michael, was one of J.M.Barrie's favourite boys who inspired him to create the characters of Peter Pan and the lost boys. To honour this pivotal date, Regent's Park Open Air Theatre in association with Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity, releases images from the J.M. Barrie archive, including the last letter written to Barrie by George Llewelyn Davies from the trenches the day before his death at the age of 21.

Today in 2008, The 39 Steps opend at the American Airlines Theatre, where it ran for 771 performances. The play is a farce adapted from the 1915 novel by John Buchan and the 1935 film by Alfred Hitchcock. Patrick Barlow wrote the adaptation, based on the original concept by Simon Corble and Nobby Dimon of a two-actor version of the play. The play's concept calls for the entirety of the 1935 adventure film The 39 Steps to be performed with a cast of only four. One actor plays the hero, Richard Hannay, an actress plays the three women with whom he has romantic entanglements, and two other actors play every other character in the show: heroes, villains, men, women, children and even the occasional inanimate object. This often requires lightning fast quick-changes and occasionally for them to play multiple characters at once. Thus the film's serious spy story is played mainly for laughs, and the script is full of allusions to (and puns on the titles of) other Alfred Hitchcock films, including Rear Window, Psycho, Vertigo and North by Northwest.

According to the show's official website, The 39 Steps, which ran on Broadway in 2008-10, will reopen in New York City this spring. The play resume performances off Broadway at the Union Square Theatre in April 2015, and will run indefinitely.
