Carnival in Flanders - 1953 - Broadway

Based on the film La Kermesse Heroique by Jacques Feyder.


Screenplay by C. Spaak, J. Feyder and B. Zimmer.

It is 1616 in the town of Flacksenburg in Flanders (a region of modern-day Belgium).When the Spanish army marches into Flacksenburg, the mayor of the town decides to play dead in hopes that the army will leave. Plans become complicated when the head of the army, the Duke, becomes infatuated with the mayor’s wife, Cornelia. The mayor is forced to continue to play dead and watch as the Duke pursues his wife.

The Music Division of the Library of Congress will receive an extensive collection of Broadway and personal memorabilia from the estate of Broadway giant John Raitt, who originated the role of Billy Bigelow in the Rodgers and Hammerstein show 'Carousel' and also starred in 'The Pajama Game,' 'Oklahoma!' and other top musicals from the 1940s to the 1960s.

New York City Ballet's Georgina Pazcoguin will join American Dance Machine for the 21st Century at a special guest artist during their return to the Joyce Theater (175 8th Avenue), December 21, 2015 - January 3. 2016. Known for her wide range of dramatic and dynamic roles as a soloist at NYCB, including Anita in Jerome Robbins' West Side Story Suite, Pazcoguin will perform in all of the evening shows, in which she will be featured in the Chita Rivera role in Jack Cole's 'Beale Street Blues,' Victoria's solo from Cats, and Jerome Robbins' 'Mr. Monotony.'
