This video was filmed at the sold-out release show for Marinho's debut album, ~ (tilde), on Oct. 24 at ZBD in Portugal, where many great artists, such as Angel Olsen, Kevin Morby, Weyes Blood, Devendra Banhart and more, have had their first shows in the country. CATS is a show that, on paper, isn't necessarily an easy sell. The narrative is simple: once a year a group of cats come together for the jellicle ball, and their leader Old Deuteronomy selects one cat to ascend to the Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a new life. There isn't too much structure to the plot besides that a?" cats come and go, introducing themselves and sometimes each other, and generally justa??do cat things. Because of all that, I wasn't the most optimistic viewer at the start of the night. By curtain call I was debating adopting a cat and naming it Mr. Mistoffelees, even with a lifelong track record of severe allergic reactions to the animals.

You might not be familiar with the name Philip Labes, but there's a good chance you've seen him in guest roles on buzzy TV shows like a?oeWatchmena?? and a?oeGLOWa?? or co-starring with Anthony Rapp and Cheyenne Jackson in the feature film a?oeOpening Night.a?? Or perhaps you've seen his music videos and sketches online. Mr. Labes is clearly a man with a lot of irons on the fire. He also co-wrote (with Michael O'Konis) and stars in the improbably-named a?oeMore Guns! A Musical Comedy about the NRAa?? which is coming to San Francisco's Z Space in late January after running for 18 months at Second City Hollywood. Labes is the sort of young performing arts polymath who is perhaps just that one key role or project away from becoming something of a household name. BroadwayWorld spoke to him recently from his home base in LA. In conversation, he is both joyful about his work process and sanguine about the challenges of forging a successful career in the performing arts.

Indian American actress and playwright Dipti Mehta’s award-winning work, HONOUR: Confessions of a Mumbai Courtesan kicks off Women’s History Month at The Marsh, which will focus the spotlight on female performers throughout the month of March. Offered via a MarshStream livestream, HONOUR incorporates original music, the dazzling colors of India, and a riveting plot worthy of Bollywood. Described as Memoirs of Geisha meets Slumdog Millionaire, it is a vibrant coming-of-age story set in the red-light districts of Mumbai. Centering on a mother-daughter duo, it examines inter-generational prostitution and why it exists, and addresses the issues of sex trafficking and human rights. This compelling work was named “Best Solo Show” at New York’s FRINGE in 2016 and was hailed as “beautiful and devastating” in a five-star review by Time Out NYC. Following the performance, Dipti will join the Solo Arts Heal host to discuss raising awareness and how to make a difference in the community of sex workers. HONOUR: Confessions of a Mumbai Courtesan will be streamed at 7:30pm PST on Wednesday, March 3. For more information, visit The performance will also be archived and available to watch on demand via The Marsh’s YouTube channel. BroadwayWorld recently spoke with Mehta while she was spending some time in Mumbai before heading back to her current home base in New York. To say that she has led an atypical life would be an understatement. An ardent feminist from a very young age in Mumbai, she became an actress and radio host in her teens before coming to America to get her doctorate Molecular & Cellular Biology and work in cancer research at Sloan Kettering. In recent years, she has returned to her true passion of theater with a focus on telling stories we haven’t heard before. In a wide-ranging conversation, we talked about the genesis of HONOUR, her unorthodox career path, and the current status of South Asian representation in the arts.
