Dear Readers, the bio-musical is a tricky thing. Some love them, some hate them. For me, it all depends on if you have an affinity for the music of the subjects, plus it needs a strong book. And then there’s the current show from Village Theatre, “We Ain’t Ever Gonna Break Up: The Hymon and Parfunkel Musical”, a show bold enough to create a made-up songwriting duo and spend their time poking fun at the genre they attempt to fit into, the bio-musical. But, without recognizable songs to hook you, we’re left with the strength of the book. Luckily the book is hilarious, assuming you’re a fan of the well-crafted groaner. Which I am.

Certain facets of the human condition are foundational to our very existence – change, connection, desire. One such particularly toxic universal truth is a constant need to be something more than we currently are. To search for happiness in external achievement rather than within ourselves, in our simple joys. Pippin at Signature Theatre breathes within that precise virulence, relatively orchestrated by a troupe of impeccably costumed and choreographed players. A feast for the eyes in all senses, Matthew Gardiner’s production surpasses even the highest of expectations.

“Stories are stories are stories, whether it’s Wagner’s Wotan and Fricka (in the Ring), Handel’s Jupiter and Juno (in Handel’s SEMELE) or Broadway’s Tevye and Golde (FIDDLER ON THE ROOF) and they repeat in different cultures and traditions,” General Manager and Artistic Director of the Atlanta Opera, Tomer Zvulun, said to me. “And whether it’s talking about siblings or spouses, or parents and children, we always end with similar concerns.”
Our conversation was about his company’s new production of Wagner’s TWILIGHT OF THE GODS, better known to Wagner aficionados as GOTTERDAMMERUNG, which opens on May 30 at Atlanta’s Cobb Performing Arts Center.
