Creative Loafing's craft cocktail competition, HighBall, is back for another round of tipsy fun on Thursday, May 11th, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Rialto Theatre (1617 N. Franklin St. in Tampa).

Coach and five-time CMA Male Vocalist of the Year Blake Shelton, multi-Grammy Award nominee Charlie Puth, and Grammy, CMA and ACM winner Maren Morris are set to perform on NBC's three-time Emmy Award-winning musical competition series, THE VOICE.

Buffalo Theatre Ensemble (BTE) rounds out its 2016-2017 'Year of the Phoenix' Season in the McAninch Arts Center's intimate Playhouse Theatre with Alan Ayckbourn's 'Improbable Fiction,' directed by BTE ensemble member, Bryan Burke,* May 4-June 4. Vilia Putrius, one of Festival Ballet Providence's (FBP) leading dancers for more than ten seasons, will retire from the company at the end of FBP's 39th Season next month. Ms. Putrius, who joined the FBP company in 2006, has performed many of the most memorable principal roles in FBP's repertoire, such as Juliet in Romeo & Juliet, the Sugar Plum Fairy in The Nutcracker, Odette/Odile in Swan Lake, among many others. Her final performance will be Sunday May 14, 2017 at The Vets, dancing the title role in Cinderella.*

My expectations for the premiere of MIDWESTERN GOTHIC at Signature Theatre were so high that the musical itself was bound to fall short, no matter what. Billed as a darkly funny thriller, it's got atmosphere in spades and boasts laudable performances from a cast of committed actors. But that isn't enough to keep the whole affair from feeling like an interesting concept still in search of a form.
