While August is quickly winding down, much of the country is still engulfed in an oppressive summer heat. Whether or not it's global warming (it's global warming), there is no escaping the Dog Days of Summer. So, for our monthly feature, Jeff Walker and I made the only tangentially related leap to take a look at our favorite showtunes about animals, dogs or otherwise. Palo Alto Payers, the Peninsula's first theatre company, presents CHICAGO, a brilliant musical satire that brings you the razzle­dazzle music of vaudeville, show­stopping dance numbers - and all that jazz! Written by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, with music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and based on the play by Maurine Dallas Watkins, CHICAGO is the winner of six Tony Awards. CHICAGO will play for 11 performances, September 11-27, 2015 at the Lucie Stern Theater located at 1305 Middlefield Road in Palo Alto.

VWA Theatricals has found its Cathy and Jamie for the upcoming production of Jason Robert Brown's The Last Five Years: Delaney Amatrudo and Luke Denison. Amatrudo and Denison will lead the cast for the musical, which opens tonight and runs through August 22 at Nashville's iconic Darkhorse Theater. Amatrudo currently studies at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts and Denison is a recent graduate of Indiana University.

Children's Theatre Company (CTC) begins its 50th Anniversary celebration on August 9, 2015 with a grand-scale, FREE family Season Opener at Target Field. Just announced, CTC alumna turned two-time Tony-nominated Broadway actress, Laura Osnes, will perform at the event that will also include interactive games, performances by CTC cast for the upcoming season, Theatre Arts Training students, and a jumbotron screening of the never-before-seen filmed theatrical production of A Year with Frog and Toad, based on the Arnold Lobel stories with the original Broadway cast in high definition. The event will begin at 5:30pm and end at 8:30pm.
