Review: THE SORCERER at Winter Opera

by Steve Callahan - Nov 11, 2025

Gina Galati’s delightful Winter Opera company has opened its season with a revival of a rarely seen Gilbert and Sullivan show—The Sorcerer.   It premiered in 1877, the first of the grandly popular series of light operas by G & S in which the authors had total control over casting and staging.

Review: SALOME at Union Avenue Opera

by Steve Callahan - Aug 18, 2025

Kelly Slawson brings a dazzlingly powerful, beautiful voice to the title role.   It’s an unforgettable triumph in a real tour de force.

BWW Review: BON IVER & TU ~ MUSIC AND THE MOVES ~ ENTERTAINING AND EVOLVING ~ COME THROUGH at The Hollywood Bowl

by Valerie-Jean Miller - Aug 9, 2018

August 5th, 2018 During the summer months at the Hollywood Bowl, it is still light out when the evening's program begins, which afforded me the chance to take a look around and peruse the patrons. It seemed a bit atypical as far as age range of most Bowl goers; a rather young and hip group. It was a very packed crowd that assembled, hosted by KCRW's Musical Director Jason Bentley, to first hear William Brittelle 's Spiritual America featuring Wye Oak and the Metropolis Ensemble and then to experience the sensation of Tu Dance Company, accompanied by Bon Iver, in 'Come Through.'

BWW Review: ABT Bewitches with La Bayadere' at Dorothy Chandler Pavilion

by Valerie-Jean Miller - Jul 20, 2018

On Friday July 13th, I witnessed the incredible performances of Misty Copeland, Isabella Boylston and Jeffrey Cirio as the lead soloists in the mesmerizing and captivating La Bayadere', at the world-renowned Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, at the Music Center in Downtown Los Angeles. ABT was presented as part of the 15th season of Gloria Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center. Thank you, Gloria, for being so generous in your love of Dance. It is a vitally important part of Los Angeles being able to appreciate Dance as one of the primary communicative Arts worth sponsoring and being available to our entire community. It is more important than ever, as, sadly, our support and funding for the Arts keeps dwindling on especially the National level.

San Francisco's acclaimed Merola Opera Program, one of the most prestigious and selective opera training programs in the world, offers audiences a look at the opera stars of tomorrow with a lively, fully-staged production of The Rake's Progress. Based loosely on the eponymous eight paintings and engravings by William Hogarth (1733-1735), Stravinsky's dramatic opera follows the decline and fall of a profligate heir who makes a devil's bargain with Nick Shadow, abandoning life in the country and his tender fiancee for the wicked temptations of London. The Rake's Progress will be performed 7:30pm, Thursday, August 2 and 2:00pm, Saturday, August 4 at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. For tickets or more information, visit www.merola.org or call (415) 864-3330.

BWW Review: West Coast Premiere of PURE CONFIDENCE Races to the Top of the Pack

by Shari Barrett - Apr 18, 2017

Since I left the theater last Sunday, I have been singing 'Camptown Races' (sometimes referred to as 'Camptown Ladies'), a comic song written by Stephen Foster, known as the father of American music who was considered the pre-eminent songwriter in the United States of the 19th century. Appropriately, the song was published in 1850 in Foster's Plantation Melodies, making it the perfect theme song for PURE CONFIDENCE, a play set in the high-stakes world of Civil War-era horse racing. This surprisingly funny and daring story takes a look at the complexity of race relations, love and dignity in the second half of the nineteenth century. Against a vivid backdrop of fast horses, gritty racetracks and high-stakes betting, it's an extraordinary tale of human triumphs and failings.

Photo Flash: First Look- Echo Theatre Company Premieres FUGUE

by Sally Henry Fuller - Feb 14, 2015

How can composers Arnold Schoenberg, Piotr Tchaikovsky and Carlo Gesualdo balance the chaos of their creativity with their need for love? Playwright Tommy Smith and director Chris Fields (the team behind last season's Firemen, named one of the "Best Stage Plays of 2014" by Los Angeles Times theater critic Charles McNulty) trace three real-life love triangles in a passionate tale of intrigue, jealousy and music. The Echo Theater Company presents the world premiere of Fugue, opening on Feb. 14 (Valentines Day) at the Echo's Atwater Village Theatre home. Below, BroadwayWorld brings you a first look at the new show!
