I attended Avenue Q at a sold-out Saturday night performance on Pride weekend in Portland, and the house was filled with people who clearly knew the show and were ready to have fun. The couple seated next to me, however, came with a group of friends and seemed confused about what they were going to see. 'It's Sesame Street for twentysomethings,' I explained. 'It's a great comedy.' And so it is. But what hit me this time (my third) was how sweet and likable the show is. At the end of Act One, when the various plots hit their snags and the characters are heartbroken, I heard an audible 'Awwww' throughout the house.
This is the triumph of Triangle Productions' 2013 take on Avenue Q: They've found the heart underneath the goofiness. And this is by far the best rendition of the show I've seen.

Well, it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas - I guess Rachel singing a Christmas classic last week is the Glee equivalent of Santa appearing at the end of the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade, except Rachel wasn't riding a sleigh and looking awesome. …Get on that, Ryan Murphy - tick, tock for next year's Christmas spectacular de Glee. But, let's not jump in 2013 right away now - there's still a Glee Christmas awaiting in the wings - has it been a good little glee child or is it sitting atop the naughty list? Shake a jingle bell, and let's rock this biznitch.
After falling out of his chair, Artie makes a wish that he was never in his wheelchair, which prompts him to have a dream of a world where Glee Club never existed - Becky is the school whore, Finn, Puck, Ryder, and Sam continue to bully a held back Kurt, who never met Blaine, and Rachel is a librarian in training hiding in the chorus of the local production of The Music Man, while Mr. Schue is miserably married to a faking a pregnancy Terri and Emma married Ken. Determined to defy the images of this world shown to him by guardian angel Rory, Artie brings the members of the glee club together and performs Feliz Navidad which lands with a thud. After being told by Rory that Quinn died following her accident without support from the glee club, Artie gets back in the chair and all is suddenly right with the world.

Christmas is right around the corner, and so is Shakespeare & Company's annual production of David Sedaris' irreverent Christmas memoir, The Santaland Diaries. Once again directed by Artistic Director Tony Simotes, this will be the third and final year Shakespeare & Company calls on an actor to don the regulation pointy-toed socks. This year, Shakespeare & Company welcomes longtime Company member David Joseph Hansen to play Sedaris' less-than-merry autobiographical self, Crumpet the Elf.

Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year. A time of giving. A time of good cheer. But there's something strange in the eggnog this holiday season and it's all on display in Investigation Discovery's new one-hour special, NIGHTMARE CHRISTMAS. A naughty husband pays the price for opening his gifts five days early. Then, a Christmas Day caper sends a congregation into chaos when greedy Grinches make off with the church donations. And a ruthless thug gives Christmas re-gifting a macabre twist when he bestows his mother with a lavish but bloodstained robe, brutally unraveled off a recent victim. Using Investigation Discovery's signature recreations and interviews paired with all the classic elements of a retro Christmas special - including a holiday score, wintery motifs, and a narrator that sounds like Kris Kringle himself - NIGHTMARE CHRISTMAS premieres Thursday, December 13 at 10 PM E/P.

There's a certain amount of pressure when a theater company becomes the first in the area to produce a big name show locally. Yes, it's a coup to be the first to get the rights (and Balagan seems to be cornering the market on that this season) but they also need to do the show justice or else, why bother? This is why what Balagan is pulling off with their current production of "Avenue Q" is all the more spectacular. Not only have they put up one of the new hot shows but they've done it in a way that rivals any tour of the show and created an outstandingly fun time that will leave you grinning all the way home.

You know that the holiday season has officially arrived in Central Ohio when Shadowbox Live gifts us with the opening of its annual musical sketch comedy, Holiday Hoopla. Just as nutty as fruitcake, a little sassier, and so much sweeter, this is hilariously fun how has become so wildly popular that in its 21st revision, it has already sold out many nights a month ahead.
