Technically any venue with 500 seats or more, located along Broadway in New York City's Theatre District is a Broadway theatre, and the art that is produced in these special places is widely considered the highest form of theatrical entertainment in the world. Today, forty-one theatres are technically Broadway houses, each with their own rich history. From October 6 to 27 at the Upper East Side's Bohemian National Hall and Jan Hus Church, GOH Productions will present a Centennial Heritage Festival, featuring mainstage marionette theater productions for adults and kids and musical concerts for audiences of all ages. Volunteers of America-Greater New York (VOA-GNY) will launch OPERATION BACKPACK 2015, its annual drive to collect new backpacks filled with brand new, grade-specific school supplies for thousands of children living in New York City's homeless and domestic violence shelters. Broadway actress Paige Davis has been the spokesperson for OPERATION BACKPACK for the past ten years. OPERATION BACKPACK kicks off Monday, July 13th and continues through Friday, August 7th.

(American Opera Projects) and Adelphi University present Independence Eve, a new chamber opera in three scenes that explores the troubled journey of race relations in America. The concert performances will take place on Thursday, November 13 at 7:30PM at the Concert Hall of the Performing Arts Center at Adelphi University (1 South Ave, Garden City, NY 11530), with a second performance on Saturday, November 15 at 8PM in the Great Room at AOP's South Oxford Space (138 S Oxford Street, Brooklyn, NY 11217). Composed by Sidney Marquez Boquiren with a libretto by Daniel Neer, the opera will include performances by baritone Jorell Williams, and tenor Brandon Snook. Damian Norfleet will act as stage director, while Mila Henry will provide music direction and piano.

Japan Society announces its 2014-2015 Performing Arts Season featuring works by visionary artists in music, dance and theater. In this season, the Performing Arts Program presents two large-scale series of events: in music, The Shamisen Sessions in Fall 2014; and in Spring 2015, Stories from the War: Reflecting on WWII through Theater, a series of theater events marking the 70th anniversary of the end of WWII; in addition to long-running programs such as the Contemporary Dance Showcase, Annual Play Reading Series, a commission premiere and related events.

San Francisco's cutting-edge Cutting Ball Theater today announced the lineup for its 13th season. The season opens in October with Strindberg Cycle: The Chamber Plays in Rep, August Strindberg's Chamber Plays in new translations by Paul Walsh, directed by Cutting Ball Artistic Director Rob Melrose; this will be the first time all five of Strindberg's Chamber Plays will be performed together in repertory in any language.

The Old Globe's 2012-13 Season will feature the World Premieres of two new musicals: Allegiance - A New American Musical by Jay Kuo and Lorenzo Thione and A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder by Robert L. Freedman and Steven Lutvak. The season also includes George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion in celebration of the classic play's 100th anniversary and the World Premiere of a new adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House by Anne-Charlotte Hanes Harvey and Kirsten Brandt. Two recent Broadway hits will make their San Diego debuts at the Globe: David Lindsay-Abaire's Good People and Jon Robin Baitz's Other Desert Cities. Artistic Director Robert Falls trades epic for minimalistic in his actor-centric revival of Anton Chekhov's classic The Seagull, with a cast that includes some of Chicago's most celebrated talent. The culmination of two years of meticulous research and preparation, this production of The Seagull marks a departure from Falls' recent large-scale work-and a focus on the method of Konstantin Stanislavsky, the man often credited as 'the father of modern theater.' An ensemble of 14 brings this 19th century masterpiece to life, including Francis Guinan, making his Goodman debut as the retired judge Sorin, and Mary Beth Fisher as his sister, Arkadina, a beautiful, selfish actress. For this revival, Falls has tapped an acclaimed, award-winning design team-Todd Rosenthal (Set), Ana Kuzmanic (Costumes), Keith Parham (Lighting) and Richard Woodbury (Sound). Goodman Theatre continues to celebrate its 10th season in Chicago's North Loop Theatre District with The Seagull, which runs October 16 - November 14, 2010 in the Owen Theatre; tickets are $10 - $45.
