The Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia) has collaborated with celebrated theatre director and visual artist Robert Wilson to organize a first-of-its-kind exhibition highlighting the drama, rituals, and opulence of the Qing Empire, the last imperial dynasty of China. Wilson has created an immersive, experiential environment to display rare court costumes, jades, lacquers, bronzes, gold ornaments, paintings, and sculpture from Mia's renowned collection of Chinese art. Power and Beauty in China's Last Dynasty: Concept and Design by Robert Wilson, presented by Sit Investment Associates, is curated by Liu Yang, Mia's Curator of Chinese Art. The exhibition, which opened on February 3, will run through May 27, 2018.

Theater for the New City (TNC) presented a highly successful developmental production of 'Josh: The Black Babe Ruth' by Michael A. Jones last Spring in its small Cabaret Theater. In honor of Black History Month, TNC will re-mount the drama February 8 to 25, 2018 in its larger Cino Theater. Bette Howard directs. The play dramatizes the life, loves and ultimately the tragic decline of Josh Gibson, who was perhaps the greatest slugger of the Negro leagues and who, some say, died of a broken heart in 1947.

A play written by Beth Graham, Charlie Tomilnson and Daniela Vlaskalic, the play relates the true story of George Joseph Smith, a man who married three vulnerable maids during England's early 20th century and then immediately drowned them in their own bathtubs.

The impact of the story's message was so significant, it prompted a letter of recognition to L. Ron Hubbard from the Council Members of the Blackfeet Nation which read in part, 'Like 'Yellow Hair' you have walked the Blackfeet path with honor and have showed our people in a true light. Never has our morals and ethics been presented with such clarity.' L. Ron Hubbard was born on March 13, 1911 in Tilden, Nebraska and soon thereafter moved to Helena, Montana, where a young Ron learned to read and write, ride horses and pan for gold. It was also in Helena that he was honored with the status of Blood Brother of the Blackfeet Indians. He later became one of America's most prolific writers of popular fiction producing over 18 million words of fiction with a writing career that spanned over five decades. During the 1930s and 40s he authored more than 250 short stories, novelettes and novels under his own name and any of his 15 pen names at a production rate of about 100,000 words a month. As football season kicks into full swing, former Pro Bowl Philadelphia Eagle Mike Boryla returns to Plays & Players, to remount his hit January World Premiere, The Disappearing Quarterback, recalling the glory of his playing days and the complex aftermath of concussions for himself and his teammates. A play for football fanatics and novices alike, the one man show runs nearly 75 minutes with performances September 20-27 at Plays & Players Theatre, 1714 Delancey Place.

This unique script has provided the opportunity for both parents and their children to have a role in the performances; the cast includes all ages ranging from 7 to 50. All actors have embraced a completely different culture, and some will speak the Indian language as it was known in 1911.

The New York Philharmonic will present its 11th season of Summertime Classics, July 2-6, 2014, featuring five themed concerts with Bramwell Tovey, who has been the host and conductor of the series since its founding in 2004. On the first program, July 2-3, 2014, titled 'Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, and Friends,' the New York Philharmonic will perform Shostakovich's Festive Overture; Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 1, with pianist Joyce Yang as soloist; Musorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain; Rachmaninoff's arrangement of his own Vocalise; and Tchaikovsky's Waltz of the Flowers from The Nutcracker, and Marche slave. The second program, July 4-6, 2014, titled 'Star-Spangled Celebration,' will feature the New York Philharmonic and United States Marine Drum & Bugle Corps - 'The Commandant's Own,' which is celebrating its 80th-anniversary year - in a program that includes Copland's Clarinet Concerto, with Associate Principal Clarinet Mark Nuccio as soloist, and Fanfare for the Common Man; Gershwin's 'Strike Up the Band' from Strike Up the Band; Sousa marches; and more. In these performances Major Brian Dix, director and commanding officer of 'The Commandant's Own,' will share conducting duties with Bramwell Tovey.
