BWW Review: CABARET at SF Playhouse is an Eye-Popping, Wonderfully Acted Revival That Is As Relevant Today As When It Premiered in 1966.

The French Institute Alliance Fran aise (FIAF), New York's premier French cultural and language center, today announced the 2019 Crossing the Line Festival, featuring 11 performances and a gallery exhibition from a geographically, generationally, and artistically diverse group of artists whose work transcends genres and boundaries. All performances are world, US, or New York premieres; they are united by their convention-breaking fearlessness as they confront topics from social injustice to personal demons. Many of the performances pay homage to legendary artists of our time and previous eras, while the theme of migration and its transformational effects on identity informs several others. I was a blank page and opening night, the NYNE cast of Cabaret left permanent marks all over me. A latecomer to the live theatre world, I knew a movie and musical existed, and it is important to me to cross this classic musical off my list of must-sees. I'd heard some of the songs because they occasionally popped up in musicals playlist on Spotify, but had no idea what the show is about. I try not to research before going to a performance because I want to see if the cast can tell me the story. The uneasy juxtaposition of a seedy cabaret of sexy guys and girls in lingerie where anything could happen, showcased in a church community center only added to this stunning, provocative production. The show would have lost its impact without the choice of live music, under the masterful direction of Joseph Scarbrough. I had no idea the audience would be entertained by a titillating cabaret while the world is falling apart. I didn't realize a musical written in 1966, revised in 1998, would sadly be art imitating life.

The newly confirmed Saturday, June 29 show at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas is the newest addition to Paul's first extended stateside run since the "One On One Tour" that played to some 2 million fans around the world during 2016 and 2017.

U.S. transmedia producer Starlight Runner Entertainment is set to reboot Japanese superhero Ultraman, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Tokyo-based Tsuburaya Productions has tapped Starlight Runner to build out the Ultraman mythology for the digital age outside of Japan, to include a possible live action streaming TV series.

With a focus on Texas before expanding to national markets, Santa Rita Film Co. has announced that Ty Roberts' “THE IRON ORCHARD”, starring Lane Garrison, Ali Cobrin, and Austin Nichols, will open in theaters starting on February 22, 2019 in exclusive engagements in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area and in the Midland-Odessa areas.  The drama, about ambitious oil magnate Jim McNeely that is based on Tom Pendleton's rousing 1966 novel of the same name, will then open in New York, Los Angeles, and additional markets across the state of Texas on March 1st as part of a theatrical platform release throughout March and April.

James Goldman's bitingly witty play A LION IN WINTER has been a favorite of mine most of my life. Written in 1966, this show has everything in my opinion; warring family, a larger than life king, a queen who is, arguably, the most famous woman in history, grasping, greedy princes, all wrapped up in a real life, high stakes game of thrones. The biggest plus is some of the best dialogue ever written for the stage, and roles that are on every actor's bucket list. As a devotee of medieval history, A LION IN WINTER, is quite simply my cup of tea. The legendary Plantagenet family known as the 'Devil's Brood' on stage at the same time? It doesn't get better. Unfortunately The Wimberley Players production is sadly lacking in the passion that runs through the veins of Goldman's work like life's blood.

The Stratford Festival lost one of its pioneers today. Douglas Rain died of natural causes early this morning at the age of 90 at St. Marys Memorial Hospital, just outside of Stratford, Ontario, the city in which he established his career, becoming one of the world's great classical actors.

LA's own Impro Theatre will perform this holiday season from the Valley to the ocean with two of their highly-acclaimed shows: 1966 Holiday Variety Extravaganza at Garry Marshall Theatre (November 30 - December 9) and Jane Austen UnScripted at The Edye at The Broad Stage (December 14 - 22). Impro Theatre incorporates audience suggestions to create completely improvised, full-length shows in each style.

Open Stage of Harrisburg and Joseph Osborne Productions invite you to join them for the world premiere of ABSOLUTELY FREAKED - an experiential rock concert featuring the early works of Frank Zappa.  Authorized by the Zappa estate and with arrangements and music direction by Joseph Osborne and direction by Chris Gibson, this world premiere showcases Frank Zappa's early works from 1966 to 1972 - including the classic Zappa and the Mother of Invention songs "Plastic People", "Dirty Love", "Who Are The Brain Police", "Going To Montana", "Brown Shoes Don't Make It" and more. 

Cabaret is a 1966 musical with music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and book by Joe Masteroff. The original Broadway production became such a hit it inspired several productions and revivals in New York and premiered in London's West End in 1968. Cabaret, the film, was produced in 1972, directed by Bob Fosse, and starred Liza Minnelli, Michael York, and Joel Grey. The film is particularly known for Liza Minnelli's rendition of 'Cabaret', a song she would come to sing in concert halls worldwide. It became her trademark.

LA-based music collective, wild Up, returns to the Younes and Soraya Nazarian Center for the Performing Arts with of Ascension, the first Jazz Club performances for the 2018/19 season on November 8 & 10, 2018.  of Ascension, co-commissioned by The Soraya, is a musical journey inspired by John Coltrane's legendary 1966 album, Ascension. 

In 1966, Doctor Strangelove's bunker became a reality! In fact, people have been living there for almost 50 years thinking that the world above had been destroyed. About a year ago, they discovered that they had been misinformed. They are in the process of preparing to re-integrate with those of us top-world, but it's a process. Cherry Pitz and Handsome Brad have been commissioned as an artists in residence to help them express their feelings about the transition - through the medium of dance. Today is a show that is the culmination of the work they have done, the question is why is that all the acts seem to be pretty dark - in fact, they all seem to be based on the films of Stanley Kubrick.

North/South Consonance, Inc. kicks off its 39th consecutive season of free-admission concerts with two exciting events part of the Latin American Cultural Week Celebration in New York City sponsored by PAMAR (Pan American Musical Art Research, Inc.) On Sunday afternoon November 11, the North/South Chamber Orchestra will perform four compositions by Max Lifchitz - the ensemble's founder and director. A native of Mexico City, Mr. Lifchitz has resided in New York City since 1966 and has toured as composer and performer throughout the Americas, Europe and the US. This event will start at 3 PM and end approximately at 4:30 PM. It will be held at the auditorium of Christ and St. Stephen's Church (120 West 69th Street) in Manhattan.

Patio Playhouse Community Theater ushers in the season of scares with the suspenseful thriller Wait Until Dark, which opened Friday, October 5. Written by Frederick Knott of Dial M for Murder fame, this version of the 1966 original has been updated by renowned playwright and adaptor Jeffrey Hatcher (Compleat Female Stage Beauty, Tuesdays With Morrie) into a sleek film noir spin for a 21st century audience, even more gripping and fast-paced than before. Set in 1944 Greenwich Village, the plot centers on Susan Hendrix, a recently blind woman who must defend herself from the murderous thieves who have broken into her apartment in search of a doll whose peculiar value will have a surprising reveal. As the gasp-inducing developments advance in a battle of wits between the clever Susan and her ruthless tormentors, she discovers that her blindness might be the unexpected key to her triumph, and ultimately, her survival.

Pepperdine University's Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art will present Richard Diebenkorn: Beginnings, 1942-1955 from Saturday, January 12, 2019 until Sunday, March 31, 2019, the exhibition's only Southern California venue. A special opening reception will be held Sunday, January 13 from 2-4 p.m. There is no admission charge and the public is invited to attend.

The Ojai Film Festival and Women In Film (WIF) will present a Legacy Series event with acclaimed actress Eva Marie Saint on Friday, November 9 at the Ojai Art Center. The intimate filmed interview produced by WIF's Ilene Kahn Power and Dorothea Petrie, directed by Petra Haffter, and edited by David Flores and Zachary Weintraub, is a 40-minute retrospective of the Academy, and Emmy award-winning star's career in film, television and stage. The event begins at 4 pm with the screening, followed by Q&A with Ms. Saint. A reception will follow.

On October 26, Capitol/UMe will release the Bee Gees' Timeless: The All-Time Greatest Hits in a 2LP vinyl edition. Already available on CD and digitally, the career-spanning collection of top hits by one of music's most legendary and acclaimed groups features 21 tracks personally selected by Bee Gees co-founder Barry Gibb.
