Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company kicks off its 31st season with the 2010 Tony-nominee and Pulitzer Prize-finalist, In the Next Room or the vibrator play, written by Sarah Ruhl, directed by DC-favorite Aaron Posner. The cast will include Brendan Averett, Polly Noonan, Daniel Pearce, Alex Podulke, Keith Reddin, Godfrey L. Simmons Jr., T. Ryder Smith, Felix Solis Jr., Kate Turnbull and Nicole Wiesner.

The sculptor Viola Frey, who died in 2004, specialized in transforming kitschy flea-market figurines into works of high art-often featuring oversized men and agitated women. With fellow artists Peter Voulkos and Robert Arneson, she was part of a midcentury West Coast movement that shook up the ceramics world by deconstructing form and injecting cultural commentary (in her case, gender roles were a major theme) into sculpture. The exhibition closes May 2, 2010.

The 2010 New York Philharmonic Concerts in the Parks, Presented by Didi and Oscar Schafer, will open with a free joint concert featuring the New York Philharmonic, conducted by Andrey Boreyko, and the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, conducted by its music director, Long Yu, with pianist Lang Lang as one of the soloists, Tuesday, July 13, 2010, at 8:00 p.m., on the Great Lawn in Central Park.
